Define "Gun Free"

Am I understanding this right....like in the mall threads that these gun free zones do not honor a ccw permit or am I reading that since its so "safe" cause we hang a "Gun Free" sign that your not required to carry?

Some states CCW laws state you can not carry into an establishment that posts a NO GUNS sign. From everything I have read the Nebraska CCW law MUST state this. So even with a CCW if you carry into the mall that posts that sign, you are carrying illegally. Just like you have no CCW at all.

Follow up question. What if they have a gun free zone policy but do not have signs up. If they "catch" you what could the ramifications be?

Varies by state law.

Some states, the sign even has to be in a very specific form or it is not valid. Certain size, certain height of letters, certain color of letters and states the PC number.

I would think in Nebraska, as in most states, if the sign was not posted you are good to go regardless of their internal policy.


Again none of this is referring to California and most of it is just my assumptions

I think the term "gun free zone" is way more common in states that are Shall Issue. They pass a Shall Issue law and it gets a lot of publicity, then business owners freak and in some cases the signs start going up.

Of course another big one is college campuses. Some of that might be law and some might be school policy.

Utah is the only state that i know of that has a law that allows students to CCW at college with a proper CCL. The college can not override the law from what I hear.

In Virgina they tried to get a similar law passed. This was before the VT massacre.

Disclaimer: Anyway, again don't take this as gospel. I am taking a lot of it from things I have learned from other CCW sites. News stories, etc.
