Default Risk/threat assessment.

Last Sunday the rural hospital where I work had a dangerous situation. A domestic assault had occurred in a community about 30 miles distant and since we’re the closest ER. the victim drove herself here. She reported that her s/o had threatened to kill her; she thought he was on the way, and adds that he always carries three loaded guns inside his truck.

Well, we immediately went into a lock down mode, law enforcement was notified and the victim’s car was relocated away from the campus. Blessedly, the Sheriffs department and the highway patrol managed to intercept the bad guy in town and made the arrest. Obviously we can only assume he was on his way here and he was indeed was found with the weapons in his truck. A happy ending there!!

While reviewing the incident I pitched a royal fit and pointed out that the facility did not have a policy in place to manage this type of incident and the reality is because we’re so rural, law enforcement could be distant and we would have to be able to stand on our own if necessary.

Also brought up the facts that there was no procedure to make a general announcement of the impending threat and if the bad guy actually was inside the facility we had no means to isolate his movements. And sadly, there were darned few places behind locked doors where someone could take refuge if the bullets started flying because the doors that do have locks, were always locked for security reasons and each of these doors required it’s own key or lock combination.

I am pleased to report that they actually listened to me! A policy covering this type of incident is being formed and they are currently replacing the keyed door locks with electronic door looks and all will be coded with the same combination.

Well… They didn’t exactly jump on the concept of allowing those of us with CCW’s to carry, but the door has been opened to develop a good policy to protect our employees and visitors and I’d like to keep this ball rolling.

My question is: Does anyone know of a professional northern California company that does risk/threat assessment that could come to our facility to evaluate, review and assist in developing a good-solid policy to protect our workplace?

We’re located in the Northern Sierra’s and no ads for this type of service could be found in any of our regional phone books.

If I’m a bit off topic here I apologize. It’s just that we’re unable to locate such a company so I thought I’d bring the question to the members here.

Eastern Plumas? hmmm. You guys did the right thing...lock down the facility, get away from the front/side doors and call law enforcement. Aside from armed security, which the hospital won't pay for...that's about all you can do.

Hey, I am glad that you have communicated your concerns to us. In a sense, what good are we, if we can not at least attempt to help out.
Hopefully someone here will be able to assist or point you in the right direction
