Default WA: Univ Staffer murdered in No-Defense Zone

--> Colleagues say UW shooting victim was being stalked
Quote:
In the last weeks of her life, Rebecca Griego was taking drastic steps to avoid an ex-boyfriend whose violence and threats had left her visibly shaken.

She changed her cell phone number. She moved. And early last month, Griego sought a restraining order, posting Jonathan Rowan's picture around her office so co-workers could serve him with the papers if he showed up.

"He has threatened to hurt me again," Griego, 26, wrote in court papers on March 6. "He ... called me to tell me I cannot find him but he can find me (knows my place of work) and to look over my shoulder because I would see him again."

On Monday, colleagues identified Griego as the victim of an apparent murder-suicide in her University of Washington office.

Officials said her assailant was an ex-boyfriend, in his 40s, who was the subject of a restraining order from the young UW staffer. Both were declared dead at the scene.

"She was left helpless and very frustrated, because nobody would intervene until something happened," said Jim DeLisle, Griego's boss at the Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies. "She did everything that a person in her situation could have done, other than leaving town." [...] [NB, Univ. Wash. is a "gun-free zone" -- only for law-abiding citizens.]

In applying for the order, she wrote that on Jan. 5, Rowan threw glass candlestick holders at her in a drunken rage, then tackled and punched her. The two were living together at the time.

"I forgave him because he was drunk but now I see that was wrong and he has threatened to hurt me again," she wrote. [...]

"He had told her in one of the threats that he would disappear for a while until she relaxed, and then he would strike," [...]

Just yet another example why enacting such laws only affect the law abiding... Criminals just don't seem to get the idea that they're supposed to follow the law too...

Default Seattle Illegal Was Safe to Murder Resident

--> Seattle's 'Sanctuary Law' Helped Kill Rebecca Griego, Says CCRKBA
Quote:
BELLEVUE, Wash., April 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Had it not been for a Seattle ordinance that forbids police officers from routinely ascertaining a suspect's immigration status, Monday's murder-suicide at the University of Washington might have been prevented because the perpetrator would have been deported months ago, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

Seattle newspapers reported Thursday morning that gunman Jonathan Rowan had been living in this country illegally for more than ten years. Stopped for drunken driving last June 30 by Seattle police, his residency status could have been determined, were it not for Seattle's ridiculous policy. Generically called "Sanctuary Laws," they tie the hands of police and allow foreign nationals a free pass to stay here illegally. [...]

This morning, I was watching Fox News and they had a commentator ranting on suing the WA PD for everything they got.

No one really showed her another solution: CCW permit for self-defense.
