LEO CCW Traffic Stop

I appreciate all the posts offering me insight to this situation. I will indeed read the required paperwork prior to signing for my permit, and always do what a LEO instructs me to do. I do not feel it proper to present the name of my instructor at this forum. I may have misunderstood his comments on the matter, and...he is not here to defend his position. However, I do plan to revist this with him "off line" the first chance I get.

Spicy.... That is a POST time rule in order to insure readiness, training and update on laws for employment as a peace officer. And it depends on which POST you have as to what the rule is.

A academy grad POST is not the same as a Commission multi-level full time peace officer basic, advanced...etc... POST and they have different rules on time and refreshers.

Either way...they never "expire". And the time rules at POST have nothing to do with CCW renewals or firearms purchasing exemptions.

We are straying off-topic gentlemen. There are obvious differences of opinion regarding POST Certification which is fine however, this thread is specific to what to do when pulled over by a LEO.

If CCWInstructor would care to step in and confirm SierraNevadaCCW's (sounds like he knows what he's talking about) version that's fine but let's try to get back on topic.

The POST Cert. expires in three years for employment at a POST department that's all. As far as using them for CCW and gun purchasing they do not expire. Depending on when you got your POST Cert. and which one you have, you may need a 3 week update class to re-hire. Anything below the basic cert, you need to start all over( with some exemptions ). This changed in 2000.

CCWI is right. POST cert's expires after 3 years of non employment as a CA PO. To return to police work you would have to take the 3 week waiver course.

Edit: and academy grads don't get POST certificates. They may get a nice cert from their academy or agency but it's not worth anything. Only after 12 months of employment and succesful completion of probation does an academy grad get his/her Basic POST certficate.

RE: the original thread. Not telling a cop you have a gun (by handing him your CCW) until asked is stupid. Regardless of your counties rules I would do it everytime. On the off chance he see's it before you tell him you have then lost the chance to talk and get to begin your inspection of the last slurry coat public works laid down.

1. Yes...POST requires a requalification course 136 hr course (couple of weeks) after a 3 year absence. That has absolutely nothing to do with firearms purchase and CCW. There is no expiration on a POST, unless you want to go back to work as a cop...then it's a refresher course.

2. Yes...the Academy certificate is not technically a POST certificate. It is however a certificate indicating you completed a POST Certified course of instruction for peace officer or reserve peace officer.

3. There are waivers and differing rules for basic post vs. academy cert on the time limits.

OMG. LOL my original point had to do with how a POST never expires when it comes to CCW or gun purchase...and how stunned gunner's statement was odd...and conflicted with his post in another thread.

True..it will get you a job. Then you can work toward your basic.

And I understood your point. POST won't expire for buying guns and such.
