Thanks

A badge is silver in color it goes on the uniform of a officer. A shield is gold and is given to detectives, hangs from neck or your belt.

That is very old school. Most department only have badges now. They say "police officer" or "deputy", if they have "dectective" they are now silver also.

Who wins the bet?

Also...in general, Sheriff Deputy stars are "badges" and are gold...in California. Deputy is a rank...so instead of it, you could see LT, SGT, etc...spelled out. In some depts. Detective is a rank and in some places it's a position at your current rank.

A Cap Shield...is a "badge" that goes on your class A cap. Mostly for formal occasions.

I thought it was more like badges on the west coast and shields on the east coast.

In my experience, I've found a star - type thingee referred to as a "badge," and a thingee that's more in the shape of a shield referred to as -- ahem -- a "shield." There. Does that clear things up?

The FBI insignia would be considered a shield. Many local police departments seem to be going to a big oval design that really does look like a shield, and some of them are big enough to probably serve the purpose. Of course, a lot of shields have stars imprinted on them.

Re: color -- Most sheriff's departments around here have silver badges for most or all. Some have gold badges, otherwise identical to everybody else's, for, oh, LT's and above.

So there. You have the definitive answer.

With the exception of "Cap-Shield"... I never heard anyone I worked with call any badge a "shield" in California law enforcement, during my time on the job.

I've always thought a shield was a badge and a badge was a shield. It just depends on what part of the country you are in as to what you call it.

There are predominately two types of badges - the star and the shield. The star is, obviously, a star shaped badge like what LA County Sheriff has. The shield is the oval shaped one, like what LAPD has. The color is usually not an issue when deciding what to call them.

From what I have seen, most Sheriff departments use the star, while most local PDs use the shield.

LOL... this thread is funny...

Yes...technically...it's shape is a "shield"...but no one calls it that here...unless it's on top of your class "A" cap....then it doesn't matter what shape it is.

That's what I meant by "It just depends on what part of the country you are in as to what you call it."

If you call an "arrest" a "collar" then more than likely you are going to be calling it a "shield" and not a "badge". The only time in CA that I have heard it called a shield was on the PPOA magazine - Star and Shield.

Long Beach's badge is gold AND silver. So that kinda blows the color theory. They also call the one for the class A hat a cap piece. Their badge also has a star attached to the "sheild" portion. That blows any theory.

I truly think shield is just an east coast thing and the only time we hear it in CA is when we watch sipowitz on NYPD blue.

Can you quote your source? I don't see the definitive part what so ever.

LAPD detectives call the gold badge a shield.

Agreed. Pretty much synonymous.
A few east coast cops refer to their badge as a shield. It seems that all the TV shows featuring eastern cops refer to them as shields. Some detectives still call theirs a shield but most of the coppers I know call it a badge.
