had my interview on April 18th '07; I called in June and was told that they were behind because of huge number of applications. I called again at the end of August and was told that DOJ and FBI background check was done and I'd hear from them by the end of September. My phone / mail has not revealed anything from SBSD; but I'm still hopeful and remaining patient; hope you can do that too, most people I've talked to say that SBSD is pro CCW.

Usually if the the paperwork looks good they encourage you to sign up for the range class, after your interview, if the interview goes well, so if you took the range class, it was a positive sign. The next issue is figerprinting and background check. Fingerprints do not take that long so it must be the background part. Thay are really backed up, minimum 6 months for your interview after you submit the paperwork.
Have you tried calling, or showing up? I asked about mine and they were cooperative, because they seemed to take a long time, just like in your situation. |

My buddy has been waiting over 20 weeks, as well. He said that his interview went really well, and the guy hinted that it was a done deal. I guess in SB County you have to get a letter from your local PD which essentially says "we defer to the SB Sheriff's authority to issue Joe Citizen a CCW". That letter my buddy got went a step further and said "Joe Citizen is an upstanding member of the community, and we wholeheartedly recommend him for a CCW".
Anyway, he did his LiveScan, got his guns inspected, and took the Sheriff's training. Apparently, this sort of wait is common in SB County. |

sent you an email; but just in case my message[s] didn't get through;here's my timeline .. got letter from local PD- went to SBSD with it and got App forms in January-called for an app't in February after I made sure all forms were ready and told them so over the phone-they told me come in Apr.18th. The day of the interview everything was done regarding photo/fingerprints/inspection of firearms/etc....the whole process took about two hours. They had a few more forms for me to fill out and was asked more questions; I'll leave out the details; I was told to call around June/July to inquire, which I did and they said they were really backed up, try again in a month. I called at the end of August and they said everything was done including background check. They had to gather more info and perhaps that would be done by the end of September; so I think it's looking good and perhaps I should call in a week or so. About the firearms class ... after my interview I was told that there was an opening on the 21st which was a few days after my Wednesday interview; didn't have to signup for that one he said, I could choose one at my own convenience, but I jumped and it was easy for me because I started shooting in August of '06; got a membership at two ranges; started competing in IDPA in February of '07 and I continue to practice and compete 2-3 times a week.

The catch is they also want 4 additional persons as reference. These will receive a form letter asking about you, but also they will be asked to include in their letter, an additional prospective 3 persons they could contact as reference about your character, etc, etc....So then you have a chain letter event. So potentially this could lengthen the time period after your interview, in direct proportion with the additional letters that may be sent in and processed. It is not mandatory that they add anyone. If they do and you have many friends then it could take longer. More land to farm!. The other thing is they are swamped by the permit applicants volume and are simply backed up! |
