Default Oregon CHL

Was just wondering how many Ca members have an Oregon CHL? If you have one would you mind sharing what county issued it and how difficult the process was.

Same here. Wish they would do what Nevada is doing.

Default Oregon CHL

I would like to expand on my original post and ask if anyone has ever attempted to get an Oregon CHL.

I have written letters to at least six different county sheriffs asking for permission to apply for a CHL. Only one of the six responded and he said he was forbidden by law to issue to any person outside of his county.

I know that the ORS have a provision that allows a county sheriff to issue to a non resident of a contiguous state. It seems that it is very difficult to find a sheriff who will use this provision of the law.

ORS 166.291(8) which says "The county sheriff may waive the residency requirement in subsection (1)(c) of this section for a resident of a contiguous state who has a compelling business interest or other legitimate demonstrated need," the sheriff of each county has discretion for a resident of a contiguous state.

It is also very difficult to get a consistant answer on loaded carry in your vehicle. Once again it boils down to officer discretion. I've been told just lay your gun in plain view in the seat. Another agency said just make certain it is not readily available. Another said lay it on the dash while another said not to put it on the dash just make certain it is not concealed.

I guess I'm just going to play it safe and unload and lock it in my hardcase while traveling in Oregon.

If you don't find anyone here, you may want to try Oregon Concealed Carry. There's also a little info at Oregon Firearms Federation | FAQ's. A Gun Owner's Guide In The Beaver State

I tried and got shot down. I have not given up though. I do know, they will do it for Washington CCW holders.

I have heard that it is easiest if you live in an ajoining county and or make frequent trips to Oregon. I do recall that some counties are easier to obtain through, but besides being of the more rural variety I am sorry I can't be of more help.

Perhaps you can find help with this out of state issue at this new web site.

I got shot down too even though I work for a gov't agency. I tried Josephine, Coos and Curry counties. I would like to hear from someone who does find a way since the Oregon law does specifically state they can. I found the sheriffs I did contact simply would not issue. Period.

By the way, Curry county has been in a state of flux since they impeached their sheriff for misconduct with female employees.

Will Rogers said, "There's three kinds of people. There's them that can learn from others, there's them that can learn from books, and there's them that has to whiz on the electric fence for themselves."

I prefer to be one of the first two kind and to learn from others' mistakes.

I do have one. However, I'm former Law Enforcement and they may have considered that in their decision. Mine is from Klamath County. Send me a PM and I'll explain the process...
