Alzheimers or dementia...total bummer. Hope some relative claims the guns from the Sheriff. Similar stuff went down in my family right before my dad went into a nursing home, only dad did not actually haul out a gun, but he did manage to threaten and get himself hauled in on a 5150, his dementia was getting into a really bad stage, he had become very violent. I was able to convince mom that I should take dad's guns away, thus ending a potential risk to himself and to others.

Just like taking away their keys, seniors do not like the idea of being unable to keep their guns. The truth is that family needs to intervene and get the car keys and guns away from them, before people get hurt. I know this sounds like typical "anti gun" talk, but mental health issues tend to change the picture considerably. NOBODY wants a crazy, 5150 guy running around hurting people and making gun owners look bad.

I Completely agree. heaven forbid if I should have that problem but I hope that my kids will think more about the safety of others than worrying about pissing off dad and taking away my guns/keys.
I also believe it is part of responsible gun ownership not “anti-gun”

well said

We have alot of elderly clients... had a 93 yr old on the line about 60 days ago.. he has had a permit since the 1930's... was 17 when he got it.. or so he says...

he shot the best group in class... by alot...like half the size of the nearest person... shot it with an old Hi-power with itty bitty sights...now he couldn't rack it himself.. had arthritis too bad... so he built himself a wood rack to "rack" the slide...his family tried to tell us not to pass him....now... he talked alot in class, added to the discussion... was on as to use of force and shot the best group... how am I not going to pass him?... and ...and... who is more likely to be attacked..him or me... and he still drives...too...... hope I can get along as well as he does if I live that long...

now... some elderly people who have dementia... need family intervention...duly noted... but a 70+ client of mine shot it out with 3 bad guys.. killed one.. put another in a wheelchair for life and scared the crap outa the 17 year old who he got in a ground fight with...so how am I to make that decision on the range... safety? sure... weird ideology?... ok but does that make him unsafe?... I think families have to lovingly take charge sometimes... each family has their own decisions...I think families have it tough though... we had to take my father in laws keys before he died... my wife saw him hit another car and drive off... that was the moment we knew we had to do something...

fortunately... the courts do take this into consideration in cases like this... at least here in kern... we had an atty with dementia take a shotgun to the code enforcement guys...he was made a felon and put on probation and we had to enforce keeping his house clean (hoarder)... was really tough.. he had been a great guy...an olympian...now reduced to... well... he had no family and the courts were in charge of his life till he passed....

You'll have to do a lot better than that if you want to sound anti-gun. Typical anti-gun talk would be, "This obviously proves how dangerous old people are. We need new legislation prohibiting anyone over the age of 55 from owning firearms."
