There are or can be several methods to avoid the use of deadly force.
First of all, avoidance of such an encounter would be preferable.
Every situation is different of course.
Along with my firearm, I carry a small cylinder of pepper spray, (recommended by my CCW instructor), attached to my keys.
I also carry a Surefire flashlight in the extra mag slot in my IWB holster.
It was recommended to us that if possible give commands to the BG to stop what he is doing or about to do in a loud commanding tone. This will or could give the BG some pause, but it also helps align witnesses to your account of the events for testimony later. If commands do not work & there is time you can give the BG a dose of pepper spray to try and deter him, and this also helps to mark him as the BG. If all of this has failed and you are in imminent danger of death due to his attack, than deadly force in ones defense could be justified.
I carry the flashlight for in case of a night time encounter, and it can be used to slow or deter an attacker. They will not be used to a victim using a flashlight and this could buy you some much needed time.

Hmm, never thought of that one before.
