Default CCW as a Passenger

I understand the correct procedure for CCW as a driver, but what if the CCW holder is a passenger in the stopped vehicle? Should one interrupt the exchange between the officer and driver to inform the officer of ones CCW status or; wait to see if the officer has any interest in the CCW holder as a passenger?

I have been told you should hand over your CCW and license. Even if you are the passenger. Well at least if you have an OC CCW you do. For your county if you are required to notify than I assume it is the same.

First of all, if you are armed keep your hands in plain view at all times. Do not reach for anything or go near your waistband.
No, don't interrupt but when you are "contacted", you should advise them that you are a CCW holder by handing them your DL & CCW at the same time. They will let you know how they want you to proceed.

Don't announce, "I have a gun" for obvious reasons.
If you do not have your DL & CCW at the ready, say something like, "before this goes any further, I need to let you know that I have a CCW and I am armed". Again, they will let you know what's next.

Why should a passenger even volunteer and get involve in a traffic stop when he/she has nothing to do why they were stopped? Confronted, yes, but I doubt it, unless you look suspicious.

There can be many reasons for a traffic stop. The driver may have warrants. The car or occupants may fit the description of one or someone used in recent criminal activity.
I don't advocate volunteering anything except common courtesy and respect. My suggestion makes the assumption the passenger is contacted meaning spoken to by an LEO. If not contacted there's no reason to interject yourself into the investigation.

I think this, and the referred to thread are more OC centric. For instance, in EDC, there is no requirement to announce the CCW. If that day comes, i will have to decide what i will do when the time comes. I DO keep my CCW w/ my license, in a holder in my front pocket.

I will give an example. Earlier this year, we stayed in a bay area city very near SF. I was carrying and had made up my mind, if we were stopped I would NOT volunteer the info. They are so anti gun that even w/ a CCW i would spend more "quality" time with the officer than I cared to. If they asked re: a gun, I would have handed them my CCW and acknowledged that per my EDC issued permit, yes I am.

For OC, when i am down there, if it comes up, i will DEFINATLY volunteer the info as I personally know their requirements, however, I'm not sure exactly what my "legal" responsibilities are, since EDC is my issuer, not OC.

You are not required to notifiy in OC if your CCW was issued in EDC.

OCSD adds that requirment to the CCWs it issues, it's above and beyond the California PC. I personally have no problem with it.

I do see your point however if you were stopped in SF.

Reading the post that started thread you can pretty assume he resides in a county that requires you notify just like OC.

For that reason IMO the old thread I linked to is relevant. I figure by linking to it we would not have to rehash the whole...are you detained if you are a passenger during a traffic stop argument.
