You can of course practice carrying your actual handgun all you like in your own home or apartment without violating the law.

Not sure what the rest of you think but I don't think it's a very good idea to conceal carry a toy gun around in public.
I do like the idea of practicing at home. And I think it's probably a good idea to carry something around in public just don't think it should resemble a gun. |

This is a good read. Some very good points are made.

I've been practicing carrying my 4" 686 around my property during the day. It does get heavy and in the way and I realized that it is kind of big to carry in a holster and remain concealed. It is a lot different from standing holstered and ready to fire at the range. Once I start moving around my holster rides up to my waist and is uncomfortable. I ordered a Tommy's gun pack which should make things easier for not feeling lopsided and will hopefully be comfortable around my waist. Now to consider what to carry if I get the CCW...

Yeah, that beast is a little over 2 1/2# when loaded. That's a lot of metal to be lugging around. If you are familiar with that weapon and like it you may want to try out a J frame or Night Guard. That will shave off almost 3/4#. It may also be worth it for you to try a semi-auto. My wife fires my XD40 with no problems but she prefers a PPK or Bearcat. There are sooooo many ways to go out there. Do your homework and try out some rentals at the local range.
Good luck, Keith

You should practice carrying at home the gun/holster you will use in the real world. It will feel uncomfortable probably, especially if you have a new holster. Get used to it, it will make you feel more secure, not more comfortable.
BTW, I carry a full size (steel) 5" 1911, usually 15 hours per day, it felt funny at first, but it is now quite comfortable--get a GOOD gun belt, it will help support and distribute the weight evenly, keep it snug and it will also help to tuck in all your gear and conceal it better. Expect to pay an absurd amount for a good holster and gun belt, of course after you buy the cheapo gear, thinking it will work fine at a lower price ![]() Personally, I like my Milt Sparks holster and belt, but others are quite fond of TTGunleather (TT GunLeather High Quality Leather Gun Holsters), they also look like high quality products. |

Got the Kimber in the Holster now. Even loaded and carrying a spare mag, it is not too bad on the ankle. Printing issues are minimal so far.
It turns out that the weight and distribution of it make it easier than the 2lb weight by itself. This may work, if I can get to it reasonably well. That may end up being the challenge, as mass and printing seem to have been solved. FWIW, it is an Uncle Mikes #1 ankle holster. The Kimber Ultra is snug to be sure, but it fits. |

Carrying a toy gun has it's merit, but carrying the real thing around the house in the holster you will carry it in has many advantages. Have to agree strongly with SB about the belt. I wear 5.11 belts. I have three, and they are fantastic. They even have a little handcuff key holder in the back for emergencies.
If you want to be comfortable, and confident in your gear, you usually have to pay for it. CCW can be expensive.
