Here’s how I leaned just how connected our “Guy” is:

Monday I stopped by the OC Range for the Safety Inspection. As I walked up the stairs to the armory, I could hear another CCW wanna be receiving a dressing down for bringing in a dirty weapon. A deep, booming voice coming from a small speaker mounted next to a glass window was saying, "Come back when this weapon is clean and when you have your act together." I thought, "Great, why do I have to follow this guy?"

No sooner does the gentleman in front of me step aside and the voice says: “What do you want?” I look up and see the voice was attached to a rather large Deputy who was glaring at me through the thick glass window. I gulped, told him who I was and why I was there... and he says "And, are YOUR weapons clean?" "Yes sir," says I, and he says, "Show me!"

Just last week I completed the required CCW class taught by CCWInstructor, and during the class, Greg covered in great detail what to expect at the Safety Inspection. One of Greg’s pointers had been, “Have the weapons unloaded and slides locked back BEFORE placing it in your locked case.” I had done just that and as I unlocked and flipped open the first gun case, the Deputy, seeing the slide locked back asks, "Are you one of Greg’s boys?" I said, “Yes” and he says, "Good, I won't have to worry about you." He just smiled and didn’t say another word as I set my slide locked HG’s gently in the inspection bin.

Then he asked to see paperwork and the certificate from Greg’s CCW class. As he looked it over I used the opportunity to ask him a few questions and we started a little back and forth that eventually became a real conversation. About 2 minutes later he pulled open the door to the armory and allowed me inside to watch and talk as he completed the safety inspection on my two Glocks and Kimber CDP.

The Deputy, Dewayne, is a large imposing guy, but once you pass his "attitude" test (maybe it's the "got your act together test."), he's a really nice guy. He gave me quick tour of the armory, even pulled open the door to a couple safes holding some really nasty looking, cold and shinny hardware. (I may have found someone who has a deeper safe then does our CCWI... if that's even possible.)

Once he got down to business, he was a blur of motion... It took him about 2 sec. to field strip the Glocks and run them through his inspection. All the while he was speaking with me... and even took the time to walk me through the his version of “The proper care and feeding of the Gocks 22 & 27. Then he got to the Kimber... The world seems to stop for a moment when he picks up the Kimber. Dewayne loves the gun, doesn't try to hide it, and said if he had his choice of duty weapons, “I'd be dropping a Kimber into my Sam Brown."

Dewayne went on to tell a few Greg stories... Told me how long and how well they know each other, talked about trips they’ve taken to charity functions and other events. I got the feeling Dewayne considers Greg a friend and/or a "Blood Brother" at the very least.

I can't properly describe how much his attitude and demeanor changed once he found out I was one of "Greg’s boys." I am positive my pass through the safety inspection was much less stressful then it would have been had I not been one of Greg's boys. Hell, I actually enjoyed the experience and wished I could have stayed longer. No doubt, I rode Greg’s coat tails through the process.

Greg Block is the RIGHT GUY and I am happy to have found him.

Yep, same experience here! As soon as Dewayne saw my guns come out of the case with the slides locked back and saw my certificate from CCWI, he invited me into the room and was extremely friendly and cordial.

On Sheriff Carona, we're very fortunate to have him. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of months ago at the OC Young Republicans "ATF Day" (meaning we spend the afternoon shooting firearms at the range, then retire to a different establishment to consume alcohol and tobacco). Sheriff Carona brought along a bottle of whiskey to contribute as a door prize! He spoke on the subject of our 2nd Amendment rights and his desire for CA to become a shall-issue state and I chatted with him for a minute after. It's obvious he's every much dedicated to supporting our gun rights and I'm sure glad he's my Sheriff.

CCWI: although we have never formally met, I am in awe that you'd go to bat like that. You are a shining example of a good man. Thank you for being such an upstanding guy! (and I'm not even an OC resident!!)

The following do NOT do you justice:

But I do hope you get the message.

CCWI, you have done and continue to do good on behalf of the CalCCW membership and readers, and in my opinion, you've have made a good leap toward making California a better place.

+100 on Rick's experience. I had a similar, positive meeting with Dewayne when he found out I was "Greg trained".

I am fortunate to live in one of the more CCW friendly counties of California. Though a reasonable Good Cause Statement is still required, I believe that demonstrated good character and emotional maturity are some of the primary traits our Sheriff looks for before issuing a CCW.

To my knowledge we have not had most of the CCW qualification issues that seem to be prevalent in other counties.

All of you in Orange County as well as surrounding counties are indeed fortunate to have CCWI as a resource. His knowledge and experience is quite evident and has, no dought, contributed to many California residents recieving a CCW, not just in Orange County, but other Counties as well.

CCWIs influence regarding CCW in Orange County is quite evident, however, his actions and influence also set a precedent and an example of what one dedicated person can accomplish for other Counties within California as well.

In my opinion, CCWI is not just a resource for Orange County, but for the entire State of California.

I am still new to this forum and have never met CCWI, however I am looking forward to coming down to Huntington Beach and taking some of his courses at my first opportunity.

Thanks,

That was it...again, I'm not a cop for several reasons, memory being one. As hygyliac lovingly told me one day "I hope to GOD I never get shot and you be my witness..." In my defense, I do deal with new people there all the time, but still.

BTW, I totally forgot to say "thanks" for doing what this thread was about in the beginning anyways...

It's really cool to see that there's people in positions to help and they do. I think most people wouldn't even think about it or would think "sol for those guys"; very impressive for you to do that. SO "thanks"...you da man!

You can't help all of them (and thats the truth ) People will remember the effort. When the final call is made nobody can say that you didn't try.

I guess I was proven wrong . . . in certain instances, you can Help ALL OF THEM. Not only did CCWI try, but he succeeded. And the thing is that it didn't matter to him whether they were his students or not! How can you not respect a person like that?

Default Thank you, CCWInstructor!

As one of those whose renewal was denied (despite never having used those two words), I'd like to express my gratitude to CCWInstructor for all of his dedication and hard work on and off this forum and in and outside of OC. I really appreciate his having taken the time to remedy this situation that he could have otherwise spent taking some well-deserved leisure time-off.

Because of his efforts, the first sentence of the letter I received from OCSD today reads, "Your appeal for a permit to carry a concealed weapon has been approved." As hygliac mentioned in an earlier post, I owe CCWInstructor BIG. I would definitely like to begin retirement of that debt by taking CCWInstructor and a few others (you know who you are) to dinner. It's already a given from whom I'll be taking the required renewal class.

Thank you again, CCWInstructor!
