Default Need some help

Hey guys, I have applied for and received my CCW approval from Kern County, I then did my class-passed that, did my prints 7 weeks ago and am just waiting for Approval from DOJ. 3 weeks ago I was asked to and did resign my position as a Youth Pastor from the church I've worked at for 3 years.
Currently I am looking for another job to support my family until I either do one of the following-
A) Find another Church to work at or
B) Enter and complete a POST academy while working full time-then find a job as a Police Officer.

My past experience was in the Private Security field. As this is California, I needed to apply with the DOJ, etc to get my approval from them to work as a security guard.

Today I went down to KCS to get my Livescan done, while there the woman recognized me from my CCW scan and asked if I had gotten a CCW scan recently. I told her yes, she asked what I needed a Guard Card for, I explained that at the moment I was unemployed, being asked to step down from my position at a church and was looking for "filler" employment until I found another Church. She told me that they do not issue CCWs to Security Guards and that she would have to call the Detective about my pending app. I explained that I had already received approval from Kern County and was just waiting for my DOJ clearance. She still said that they could pull my CCW and I would have to talk to a detective, I offered to wait and she said no, that he would call me if he decided to.

Now I'm not only a little pissed about loosing my job, I'm pissed that I may have wasted several hundred dollars in classes, app fees and holsters. I'm pissed that because I am searching for a security job I may loose my right to defend my family.

Any advice on how I should proceed? Should I call the detective? I have the number on my approval letter.

Thanks for the help

Jon

Called and left a message for him. I am going for my Armed Guard as well, maybe that will make it better.

for what its worth,

I would refrain from posting emotions on a public forum, especially in the manner you did

I would not call the Detective, just my opinion but after a lifetime in Government work, calling ahead of notification may show inpatience, and possibly reflect poorly upon your application for a CCW

I would wait, but it is up to you

Hope you find a job soon, and everything works out to your benefit

Be advised that this particular issue is not in my area of expertise.
Having said that, I have been on this board long enough to have read lots about what others who are more qualified have to say about situations similar to yours, and my conclusion is that CCW permits and work related CCW issues do not go hand in hand well under the eyes of most sheriffs in California.
CCW permits are of a personal nature and not connected with any professional situations, service oriented, job related endeavors.
They simply do not want that CCW to be used to enhance your opportunity to get, maintain, provide any job related service or maintain a job position.
So then again, CCW permits are issued to individuals for their own personal safety and no more!

I would Agree XFO-WHich is why I'm getting my Armed Guard card as well as my guard card. I think that would take away any "advantage" I may get from having a CCW.

At the end of the day I would look for another job if they called me and said they would reject my CCW for being a guard. I have no issue, I just needed a job and logically, going to a job you have 3 years of exp under your belt is easier than most.

As a point, I would have NEVER CCW'd as a Security Guard. To me that's just asking for trouble. I chose to go ahead with my Armed Guard card because I believe my CCW for my family protection.

In all honesty I didn't realize that so much goes into being a guard in CA, in PA where I was a guard for 3 years I just had to get a place to hire me! No classes, no background checks, etc.

And in reality, the only difference in my life is that I'm not being paid to work at the church anymore, people still look and call me "Pastor" and people still come over for counseling. I am still looked at as clergy in this town.

This is why I said I would call if it were me. I tend to feel that "most" people are reasonable and I feel a discussion with the Detective about your actual situation could help. He needs to know that it was just something you were contemplating and that you would not go down that path if it would affect your CCW application.

I don't have the experience that some here do in dealing with the "system".... I'm just telling you what I would do in the same situation. It's worth what you paid for it.

Having a Guard Card is disqualifying? Did you have an interview with the county already?

We dont have interviews here, It was my understanding that once my background check was approved by DOJ (It has already been approved by Kern County) I would be able to come in and just pick it up.

Just got a call from KCS, they gave me a chance to revise my GC statement because my last one had some information about my church responsibilities. Seems fair enough.

CCI you can be expecting a new email from me!

Above and beyond all, I hope you find a job soon. Being without income is a real problem. I hope you'll be working soon with life back to normal. Good luck!

Thank you, and thankfully I "resigned" so I was given a Severance Package which included several months of pay. I need a job, but my family wont starve tomorrow. Please remember my small family in your prayers for those who do pray, it is very appreciated.

Man, this whole thread is a bummer. I hope that others who read this will learn from this mistake and go to a different office for another LiveScan separate from the office handling the CCW. At least the detective gave you the offer to change the GC and continue on with the CCW application. I hope that bodes well for you. It does, at least, SOUND promising. Funny how a little mistake can have such grand consequences. You just don't expect to get blind-sided by something like this in this manner. I guess you reallllly have to watch you Ps and Qs while applying for CCW.

I am certainly glad that they gave you some severance to get you over the hump. At least your family is taken care of for a little while. These are tough economic times, especially in this state. I hope you find something soon.

Good luck,

Keith

tell the sgt. that this is temp.
you are a Pastor and that is your intent... you just need to feed your family until something comes together...
ask him to simply put a restriction on the ccw to no allow you to use it while you are working in security...
'cause they WILL NOT issue you a permit if you are a security guard... before yes.. new sheriff... not so much

And it might be worth explaining that you don't want the CCW to enhance your employment.
