Default CCW in Santa Clara County?

Hello all, I am curious as to the general state of CCW in Santa Clara County? As long as it isn't San Francisco-bad I figure I'll give it a shot after EXTENSIVE preparation on these boards.

Santa Clara has 8 less permits issued in 2006 than they did in 2005. Total permits for that county is 188.

deldgeetar: To answer your question... it's not good and not likely to improve soon. My own County, although it has more CCW's out, is actually in a worse state than yours. It went from "some" new CCW's to none.

Well that is reassuring that there are at least that many. Are there special criteria to be qualified or just a "good cause" will suffice? I am new to all of this.

Most of the process is actually very, VERY straightforward. What munges up the whole thing is that each Sheriff or Chief of Police (city agency that issues) determines on their own what is sufficient for "Good Cause". The result of this is that what may constitute an essentially automatic approval in one county gets completely blown off in another county and results in a denial. Some Chief LEOs set the bar at an impossibly high standard while others are far more reasonable.

Just one state north of us is Oregon. Oregon Residents essentially go through the same basic process we do, except that they do NOT have to submit a good cause statement and if your records are clean, they have to issue a CCW to you. They can only deny for sufficient cause. The CLEOs in Oregon have very little discretion in this, no matter how the feel about it. Also, they may NOT place additional restrictions on a CCW. You have the same restrictions and exemptions EVERYWHERE in Oregon, no matter what agency issued your CCW.

That is quite the contrast from California. Each California county is different. Right now, it is what it is.

Santa Clara County is as bad as San Mateo County. As of 2006 San Mateo County has 162 permits issued with a pop. of about three quarter milion resident. My city within that county has 16 permits issued out of about ten thousand resident. But you definitely will not know until you try. I did and got denied. Much easier and painless to move than sue.
