Default Ventura County CCW Renewal

I will be posting my progress on my CCW renewal. Perhaps this will help others who will need to go through the process soon.

Last week I called Maria in Licensing at the VC Sheriff's Dept, 805-654-2371, to request a renewal package. Received package in the mail 2 days later.

Completed package and good cause letter (very similar to my original good cause 2 years ago). Package was mailed today. Only renewal apps can be mailed in, 1st time applicants must now deliver their apps in person.

My license expires 12/14/2009. I've given myself 5 months for the renewal.

More updates to follow as they occur.

Thanks for the update.

I recently renewed here in Fresno for the first time and there was no renewal packet needed. All I needed to do was take a renewal class then show up at the county jail where they do fingerprinting and turn in the class cert. and fill out a small card, wait 2 weeks and the renewal showed up in the mail.

I find it very interesting how different the process is between each county. It goes to show that no matter how complex or simple the process is the people getting the CCWs are the same honest folks in every county.

I think Ventura County sheriff is about to retire. Things may change then.

I would hope you have started early enough, as I know Ventura co. takes over a year for 1st time permits.

Just goes to show how we need a standardized policy statewide. Goes to show that your ability to defend yourself and your family is subject to the whims of an elected official. Give an elected officail a little authority, and they will exercise that authority to limit your liberty. This state sucks!

JG,

As part of your renewal did you have to "requalify" with a firearms instructor? If so, was the instructor part of the same "list" that comes with the 1st time application package?

I have to be at the courthouse in the next couple of weeks and I thought I'd stop by and ask Maria how long the renewals are taking. My permit expires in Oct 2010 so I have awhile yet before I have to go through the process.

Rob P., the firearms training/testing was not clear in the application (it's the exact same app you use when you got your CCW the 1st time). But my understanding is you do need the training. The list of instructors is the same for either applicant.

The only difference I saw in the package is that my interview for a renewal is done on the phone not in person.

No fees or class requirement is due until after my approval.

Must be careful how we do this or we may end up with a more draconian statewide policy.

Default VC Renewal Process

7-15 renewal app mailed.

Received 1st call last Thursday from the Detective doing my background check. She went over my renewal app with me, verified the info and we discussed my GC statement.

She said all looked good and the file would be leaving her desk that day. She suggested I get my recertification from my CCW instructor.

The decective mentioned it may take 3-4 weeks before I get the renewal letter from Maria in licensing.

Since my current license expires 12-14 it looks like I'll be good to go for another 2 years.

Freudian slip?........The deceptive?.....
BTW, it is very nice of you to take the initiative to let the rest of us know about the renewal process in your county. In mine we take a class, fill out renewal papers and if you pass your background you get to do it for another two years. So far no requal. at the range required.
We have a new sheriff and we may see changes here, so far the new sheriff seems to mostly follow the policies of the old sheriff, who was here for a long time, who was a legend in this county and most people revered.

Wow! Just in time. It's a good thing you started the process back in July. Congratulations on your renewal (pending) and thank you for the report.

Did my 4 hour qualification shoot / lecture on Saturday.

Monday afternoon, filled out the one page renewal form and stopped by the Sheriff's office to thumb print the rice paper and leave my check and training certificate.

Wednesday the new permit arrived in the mail.

I love Plumas County!!

I love Plumas County too. Every summer as a kid we hung out on the banks of the Feather River in Quincy. Then ice cream at the Polka Dot. Those were the days.

Received approval letter for renewal last Saturday 11/21. Completed class/requal at the range yesterday. Maria in Licensing at The VC Sheriff's station said I need to come in (no appt needed), pay $77, give her a thumb print and my renewal will be mailed in a week. I will be going to see her Friday.

Started 7/15/09. Those getting renewals start early. My current licence expires 12/14/09.
