Below are some setups I'm contemplating. I've read the Cali laws for traveling with guns in car over and over. However, after reading some Cali cases, I realize that the courts can twist meanings of words beyond common sense. So, if you have any useful insight, please comment as to the legality of these potential setups, or provide suggestions, thanks.
1. Unloaded handgun locked inside Center-of-Mass lockbox under driver's seat, lockbox cable locked to car, magazines loaded in center console. 2. (Non CCW Waepon-Setup) 3. (Non-CCW Weapon-Setup) Last edited by CalCCW03 : 07-13-2007 at 12:24 PM. Reason: Discussion of non ccw weapons and carry methods |

Maybe we should have a discussion on the legal ways to carry a shotgun in your vehicle in California.
I will take my shotgun with me on cases out in remote areas from time to time.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. My understanding and I have done this many times when I head out to go hunting. Unloaded longun exposed hanging on a rack inside your car is OK. Since I have never been stopped, it must be legal.
Might probably different if LEO find you driving around in the tenderloin district with it. Still legal, but they probably will stop and question you anyway. |

Legal or not, the question I ask myself is, if a LEO (especially in Long Beach, LOL) rolls up behind you and sees a shotty resting in a rack, will you potentially be on yours knees with his duty weapon aimed at your back? Not!!! I'd find a different way of transporting.

It's legal to have a shotgun in the gunrack, unloaded.
It still won't stop a concerned citizen from calling the sheriff/police and sensationalizing the event however (true story). Just for the sake of less hassle keep it put away.

Well...in all honesty...in my area, I just throw it in the back seat. Guess I'm a law breaker....heart breaker...love taker. LOL

BTW if you are in the Sierra Nevada the true story I mentioned before happened in the Grass Valley area. A lady saw a rifle in a top rack in a guy's truck and sensationalized it to the sheriff's office: "there's a guy down here with a gun!" The sheriff showed up, saw how silly the situation was and left him alone. But the point of the story is no matter how law abiding you are it's the reactions of others that dictates what happens. On a side story: a guy with a CCW was pulled over in town, he handed the LEO his DL and CCW permit, the cop asked what it was and he told the officer it was a CCW permit, he asked if the man was carrying, which he was, then called for backup "man with a gun". Once a superior officer got there he was dumbfounded at the entire debaucle and let the CCW holder go.

I realize this setup is legal, but does anyone have any stories to tell about interaction with a law enforcement officer while having this setup?

This thread is getting sort of confusing, but i must clarify a few things:
Loaded gun is NOT allowed unless you have a CCW, no exceptions. To transport handgun without a CCW, it MUST be unloaded, and LOCKED into a container (guncase). Try not to mix long gun and hand gun rules, since there are some differences. If these rules are confusing, you owe it to yourself to buy and read "How to Own a Gun & Stay Out of Jail" by John Machtinger, 2007 edition. Gun Law Press If you are the type of person who does NOT want to read a book, then take a class, the instructor will explain this to you in detail, and answer your questions. I suggest Self Defense Firearms Training - Be Safe, Be Confident, Get Trained! Another resource which specifically addresses transportation of firearms in California, is the website of the well known firearms attorney, Bruce Colodny, The Law Offices of Bruce Colodny sorry, i cant directly link to the specific page, but select "articles" then "transportation of firearms in motor vehicles". |
