Thanks for the story, Makes you think of what you think you'd do or how you'd react. That's why I have the alarm system call me directly not a alarm company, I then check my camera system. I have inside and outside IR cameras I can veiw via online. I have had to go twice with my wife monitoring the cameras and talking to me while I am driving there. Once we did see someone outside but they left before I arrived, the other time a false alarm or they had left. Either way I have a good idea of who what and where they are before I get there. Camera systems aren't that $$ you should check into it, saves driving time and you get more sleep.

Thanks for the suggestion on the camera system. Sounds like you have all the bells and whistles. We have cameras and can view remotely, but by the time I boot up the computer and log in to view, I could have been talking to responding deputies. I live very close and don't do computers well in my sleep. I think I will wait for officers next time. I have to look into alarm system calling me directly. Very cool.

Taking your firearm after you showed your ID and CCW was a little much but hey, it's California and law enforcement probably doesn't see many CCWs. Patting you down after you handed him your firearm was over the top.....
unless you resemble Charles Manson or some other scary looking wacko!
Just my opinion!

I guess I did look scary. I was dressed pretty poorly. I had on black sweats and a blue seatshirt- really didn't match!

Thanks for posting your experience ptbarnacle.
This is one of the reasons I joined this site, so I could learn from other's experiences. I hope not to need to show my CCW to an officer (and so far have not).
It took some guts to open up to everyone here to pick apart your experience, once again, thanks.

Thanks. Return the favor by sharing your experiences so others can learn from yours. This site is only this good because of it's members.

In my experience on the LE end, even after an officer is "called off," s/he will probably keep coming to check things out, at least as long as s/he doesn't have calls stacked up. After all, you're still in his/her beat, and going this direction rather than that direction doesn't really make much difference as long as s/he remains in the beat area. Also, there's always the question as to the legitimacy of the "call-off," just as there is question regarding the alarm call in the first place.

You could have asked the officer if he didn't mind both of you moving behind his cruiser to place it between you and the door. If you prefaced it by saying, "For your safety and mine, do you mind if..." you might even elicit a smile from the officer at having that phrase said to him.

We have no idea what the officer was thinking. He could have wanted to check if the weapon was listed on the CCW. He could have wanted to secure the weapon until the CCW check came back. He could have wanted to ensure ptbarnacle didn't draw if shots rang out inside, or someone arrested came out.

I am not sure what i would do if an officer had asked me to hand him my ccw firearm. part of me says, concealed means concealed and no reason for the officer to take it from me.
If an officer asks you, you comply. They have legal grounds to verify the weapon you're carrying is listed by serial number on the CCW.

A Terry search is totally justified in this situation since ptbarnacle already acknowledged he was carrying one weapon.
