Default Trouble knocked on my door this morning

I had some stranger knock on my door this morning. I looked through the peephole but they stayed out of sight. Turns out it was TROUBLE! Good thing I did not open my door and they did not hear me behind the door. I did see movement by the bushes in front of a person trying to hide from my view.

Turns out just minutes after the knock on my door the police caught and arrested 3 people this morning on my block who were evading capture after they ditched a car on 7th Street; 2 men and a woman. They were looking for places to hide and one was on parole. Found out a little while ago they might be linked to a string of home invasion robberies in our area too.

I had my .45 in hand just in case since it was early morning and someone knocking on my door at that hour would never happen otherwise. I NEVER open the door for people I don't know or can't see through the eyeball thingy in the door.

Granted, I was not out and about carrying per se, but it goes to show trouble can happen ANYWHERE, even at home. Just thought it would be an interesting experience to share that reminds everyone about being safe at home too. I am glad that nothing happened and my morning went normal as usual after that.

High-speed chase nets parolee
The Times-Standard
Article Launched: 10/07/2008 11:05:15 AM PDT

A high-speed chase in Eureka ended this morning when two men jumped out of a moving stolen car and fled on foot, leaving a female passenger to try to stop the car.

Eureka Police Traffic Officer Gary Whitmer was looking into a report of a man wandering in a roadway when he first saw a red Ford Taurus station wagon. The occupants appeared suspicious and eventually sped away, Whitmer said.

The car sped down 7th Street, running stop signs and reaching speeds of about 70 miles per hour, said Whitmer, who followed on his motorcycle. The car slowed down at P Street, and the driver and front-seat passenger bailed out and began running, Whitmer said. The car still rolling, the back seat female passenger climbed into the front seat and stopped the car.

Whitmer pulled the woman from the car and detained her. Other officers responding to the scene, with information from bystanders, caught one man climbing a fence to 6th Street. The other suspect entered a house and changed his clothes, Whitmer said, before officers located an detained him when bystanders pointed out the house.

Arrested at the scene was Wayman Kelly, on parole for assault with a deadly weapon and vehicle theft, Whitmer said. The other two individuals' identity were not yet confirmed.

Whitmer found shotgun shells and other ammunition in the vehicle, and police brought the car back to the station to search it thoroughly.

Whitmer said there could be a link to a recent rash of home invasion robberies in Eureka.

You just never know.

Were you in ORANGE or YELLOW when this went down?

Why do you carry? Because today could be the day.

I was in YELLOW. But I was on my side of the door, being quiet and taking advantage of the peephole thingy in the door and and they did not know I was there which is good since they left.

This is what I think possibly might have been what was going on - I have a next door neighbor who has a son on probation and hangs around with a rough crowd. These three might know him, and since they were looking for a place to hide, they mistakenly thought my place was his so they knocked on the door hoping he would answer and let them in.

Seems reasonable to me.

We live in a remote area on 3 acres. If someone knocks on our door that we don't know they will be greeted through the locked security screen by a nice Glock.

You're exactly right Tom. You never know when or where trouble will come looking for you. It simply is unrealistic to suggest that only during certain specified times and activities is someone potentially at risk.

Glad you're OK.

Glad to hear you are safe. Most people who aren't aware of their own safety would have just opened the door.

Well all it took for me was to get my butt kicked by the neighborhood bully ONE TIME when I was a kid (I think I was 9 at the time). I've always looked since then. Hopefully no one has to endure worse than that. But we all have our individual learning curve.

Easy does it, turbo. If I come to your house, to ask for directions, ask you to sign a petition or to serve you a subpoena and you point your "nice Glock" at me, you'll have a serious problem.

Use your brain. If you are nervous about a person knocking, keep it concealed unless you have GOOD reason to be brandishing or pointing it at another human being!!

In Tom's case, he never opened the door and saw additional people hiding behind bushes. Different story.

Never point that gun at anyone or anything you don't intend to destroy.

WHich is why they should make it illegal for criminals to not fill out their "intended victim" forms. Once we make that illegal then our law enforcement system will be *bulletproof*

No humor here huh?

The Glock would not be pointed at anyone but very handy.

Y'all really are something else.

A security screen is pretty good concealment. I certainly can't see through them.

Humor?

Public statements about pointing a firearm at someone for no other reason than, "someone I don't know"...isn't good for anyone... If you had placed a smiley behind it...then I would have known it was satire (if it was).

No. I've been knocking on doors for close to 20 years and have seen all kinds of "security doors/screens/bars" etc. Believe me...if someone had a gun pointed at me behind one...I'd probably see it.
