The reason you can't see through them is due to the eye's ability to fill in missing information. if the inside of your screen is painted WHITE and it is dark outside, you won't see anything. Tape off a rectangular section of the INSIDE of your security screen and paint it FLAT BLACK. When you answer the door, have the lights INside down low or off, and the light OUTside on, preferably TWO lights, one on each side of the door so the person on the other side is evenly illuminated. With this setup, you'll see through that door as if it wasn't there. Alternatively, you can paint the whole inside surface black or dark gray, and the outside surface white. This will make it difficult for a person outside to look in, while you have a nice view OUT.

To paint the doors two different colors, you have to use a nearly dry roller with a very short nap, or even use a rubber roller with NO nap, so the paint rolls on like a an ink roller. When you paint one side of the metal, you want the paint to be so little that it will not ooze through and run on the other side. Do two coats if necessary rather than trying to cover the surface in one coat. Spray does not work well, because the air current will put black paint on the white side, and vice versa.

You can also cut out a section of your security door and replace it with a sheet of 3/8" Lexan. Pop rivets through a thin aluminum strip, then through the Lexan, then through the metal screen door, then through another thin strip of aluminum will give you an unbreakable window in your security door that is as secure as the metal it replaced. Alternatively, a welder can cut out a window frame and edge it with 3/4" x 3/4" angle iron, allowing you to attach the Lexan directly to it with small screws or rivets.

Post Good Thinking.

If there is light at your back, the security peep-hole may alert the person on the exterior. Here's what we do.

We installed a disc / pendulum that keeps the peep-hole continuely covered. When we approach the door we cover the disc /peephole whith our cuped hand. Put eye to hand and lift a small lever to look through the peephole.

We have also installed a separate one for the kids.

We also have our property "Posted."

Best regards,

OIS

Tom - glad that you did not get caught up with those three yahoos. I did see that incident on the Channel 3 TV news and in the Times-Standard..... I have friends that live at the 9th and K streets area in Eureka..

When I used to live down the hill - right at the corner of the Bayside Cutoff and Old Arcata Road, I would have folks that broke down out on the Hwy 101 safety corridor come knocking on my front door at all hours wanting to use the phone. I would answer them from an upstairs window (darkened room) with a loaded weapon held behind my back. I would ask them what number they wanted to call and offer to pass a message for them. No way was I gonna answer someone banging on my door after midnight. I had to call the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office on one person who wouldn't take "NO" for an answer.

The peephole is already fixed so no one can see light thru it from the outside. And it does work very well.

I prefer to be one of the first two kind and to learn from others' mistakes.

I think you left out "Get training .........", which it sounds like you haven't had or forgot it already.

Very important.

I like the color code, it is an easy way to determine when it is time to take different action. It is also an easy to explain why you were taking the action you did and indicates you have been well trained.
