Default Gun Goes Kaboom While Holstering.......

I heard that a retired cop had a ND while holstering his weapon prior to getting in his car. The bullet, A Win. SXT, travelled 14 inches entering his thigh and exiting out of his shin, the bullet did not expand. Happened somewheres out Ventura way.
OUCH!!!..... what can I say!.

About a year or 2 ago... an OCSD deputy shot himself while holstering his gun at the range. His draw string from his jacket got caught in the holster and as he holstered his gun... it moved into the trigger well of his Glock and he shot himself in the butt. More reason for external safeties!

1911 in condition 1 vs Action safe pistols, lol. Tis why I have 3 1911's and no Glocks.

I like your thinking as it parallels mine. We do have a Glock contingent here and I am sure they my chime in soon.

I am a firm believer in a manual safety and the proper training to automatically to disengage it while drawing the sidearm. Cocked and locked all the way.

I've never had a problem with my Glock. I knew a guy who had an AD with his 1911 pistol though. He almost killed himself in his own house. This guy is a firearms instructor too.

Most people never do have a problem with their firearm. It is not the tool, but the operator.

+1 to that! I have never felt that an "action safe" pistol is safer than a 1911 in C1. When holstering, I can make sure and see that my safety is on.

No tupperware for me. Oh wait, I have a Kahr PM40. I don't consider it safer than any of my 1911s, in fact I'm very conscious of my actions during the holstering.

My first thought while reading the post was that the gun was a Glock...anyone know?

The only real safety is your brain; if that one isn't working, no mechanical device is going to help you there.

I'm always EXTREMELY cautious about holstering my Glocks, but I'd be equally cautious with a 1911. External safetys can get switched off or fail; I wouldn't rely on them to prevent an ND.

I'm agnostic on thumb safety vs no thumb safety. Let's face it with its wonderfully short and light bang button a 1911 needs to be safed before holstering. With a striker fired pistol like a Kahr or (in my case) M&P I think it's reasonably safe to do without a thumb safety under two conditions. 1) the trigger is at least 4-1/2lbs and 2) you carefully "look" your pistol all the way into the holster absolutely every time.

It's designed to expand when traveling through perpendicular layers or through a uniform medium, not when traveling edgewise through parallel lamina. Likely more lamina separation occurred and not enough perpendicular resistance. It's like the difference between trying to shove a slotted screwdriver into a board: parallel into the end-grain versus perpendicularly through the flat side. The end-grain will just split apart and let the screwdriver slide in rather easily.

OTOH, with a 1911, you have two separate safeties (your brain and the external) that have to fail simultaneously when you re-holster. I like those odds a lot better.

Don't forget the grip safety, as well.
