GREENSBURG - Stewart Hammond walked into the trailer filled with shotguns, rifles and a few pistols and adjusted his thick black Buddy Holly-style glasses to get a better view.
He was looking for his .410 pistol and .22 caliber High Standard military model handgun. Hammond was among the many people who lost their treasured firearms when the tornado blew through Greensburg a week ago. He'd had the High Standard for 50 years and the .410 for about 30. Search and rescue crews sifting through debris collected 349 guns in the days after the storm, securing them and seizing anything illegal, such as sawed-off shotguns, and stolen guns. "We had weapons blown all over town," said Capt. S. Scott Mitchell of the Ford County sheriff's office. To get them back, Hammond and other owners have to go to the trailer east of Davis Park that's staffed by law enforcement personnel. (Next week, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.) They have to show a picture ID and provide a description of their missing guns. Law enforcement officers run record checks to make sure firearms aren't returned to felons, who aren't supposed to have guns. "Once we clear them, then we take them one at a time into the trailer so they can claim the weapon," Mitchell said. If two people think a weapon is theirs, nobody gets it till later. Mitchell couldn't find Hammond's guns. He urged Hammond, who's lived in Kiowa County "for 79 years and 11 months" and in Greensburg for six years, to check back later and also try the sheriff's office. They might turn up later, Mitchell said. Thursday, 140 guns were returned to residents. Friday, 38 were returned. Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Haskin, whose home in Greensburg was destroyed, had a long list of weapons he hoped to retrieve. He joked that a lot of people could vouch for his identity as he waited in line to go into the trailer. He found his custom-made Swedish Mauser rifle on Friday. Haskin said he's not a big gun collector but does like to hunt. Some friends came by and retrieved some of his weapons for him right after the storm, he said. Most people have been patient about the situation, Mitchell said. Hammond said he wanted his guns back because of their value -- about $900 to $1,000 together -- and because he didn't want them to fall into the wrong hands. "Either one of them could be wicked," he said.

In CA we'd probably all be arrested for not properly securing our firearms.
All mine are in a safe except if something like that happens at night then what's next to my bed could be swept away in a natural disaster. I would hope we'd be fortunate enough to get them back and not experience a New Orleans-esque nightmare.

Safe's are 100% the only way, hopefully they will adopt the requirement.
