I installed several man traps in Brinks facilities when I did alarms. I'm not sure how they do the metal detector. Those money stations have infared and PIR's in the attics, though.

While I've never seen one of those 'man traps' at a bank up here, I'd think that if you managed to set one of the darn things went off and the staff was giving you the evil eye, all one would have to do is say the magic words: Prosthetic hip, got pins, screws and plates from a motorcycle wreck. Like who is gonna undress you in the doorway to check for the scars?

Or, does someone follow up those alarms with a metal detecting wand like at the airport?

I think that's the intention, but they usually end up being installed for the psychological deterrent factor and the imaginary safety they provide the patrons and employees. Oh, and for the insurance companies.

But like most security, it rarely gets used properly. I suppose if you were wearing a ski mask and holding a shotgun, they might decline to let you out.

Humorous note: I've seen several of these where the mantrap was installed with standard glass (not tempered or bullet-resistant) doors, presumably to save costs.

I really think their purpose is for Mr. Hand Note to Teller Guy. As he walks out they lock him down. Mr. Hand Note to Teller guy probably figures that is what is going to happen too, so he goes to another bank without a man catcher.

An armed robber who is serious has other options to defeat it. But again would probably pick an easier target.

So bottom line it sounds like most the banks don't worry too much about the metal detector going off on the average ordinary looking person.

LOL!

In OC, the only places I've seen the man traps at banks near the freeway or in the Civic Center in Santa Ana. In LA, they're all over, especially in high crime areas.

I'm curious what they do if you are a CCWer and you put your pistol on that table?

Do they immediately call the cops? (most likely)
Do they inspect your CCW permit? I wouldn't think they can legally make you show your permit and weapon without being a LEO officer.

What post are your referring too?

Either way your sugestion is the worst action you could take.

There is no reason to show your handgun.

Yeah... I think I'd wave my ATM card (to show them I am a customer) and car keys at them instead.
