My kids have been gone for years. I keep my daily carry on my nightstand right next to my copy of "On Combat" and a hand size crank-charge LED flashlight. Jack Russell Terrier is our audible alarm and does a fairly good "first line of defense" imitation.

I keep a P220 under my bed in a finger safe and my carry piece is un loaded in the night stand when I go to bed after the kids are in bed and on my waist before the kids are even up. I usually am packing the whole time I am up since my house is like Grand Centeral Station with people coming and going.

I used to keep the scatter gun in the safe loaded with OO buck but its all the way in the garage. I am quicker drawing from the hip than unlocking the safe.

Usually a XD45 tactical with light ....between the mattress and box spring with the grip portion hanging out... been doing that for 20 years....a streamlight tl3 on the nightstand...cocker spaniel and lab/retriever mix.... well hanging around the house.....the wife has her 45 XD tac. or her wilson combat 870 with the springy thingee stock....and the 13 year old has a Mossberg 12 with buck and slugs if the situation goes south... the 12ga normally resides in a safe though...a couple of times when things have been "hinky" around here.... it is either the AR with a 30 rounder mag or the mini with a 30 rounder (both loaded with 28 rounds .... don't ask)...

The neigbor has an AK... if she ever starts yelling at an intruder I think I will just hit the floor...hahahahahaha

Gotta love Bakersfield...

Kimber TLE/RL2 1911 with an attached SureFire X200 light and a spare mag in the nightstand unlocked (no kids), but I did pick up a nightstand drawer safe from SHOT show, so we'll see.

Just like this but blued without the lasergrips:

Glock 19 in the other drawer for the little lady, and my main carry piece (3" 1911) lives in or on my dresser with another couple SureFire flashlights (although soon will probably live in the other small safe I picked up at SHOT Show).

Cool and panache....

I learned to shoot quail with a model 97 riot gun... I was probably 21 before anyone asked me to if I had a plug in the magazine... hadn't bothered until then and had to make one from a dowel...plenty funny... was hunting for years with that gun...and never had a plug in it... Of Course dad has it in his safe, loaded and there ain't no plug in it anymore!

My 45 is always in reach with FMJ rounds and a 12ga loaded with #4 Nitro Magnums close by.
That should be more than plenty for most 2-legged goblins at close range.

Otherwise the neighbor's cat can leave a tootsie roll for them to step in

OK a Model 12 is plenty cool too... It makes cool noises when racked and has alot of class... the 97 makes more noise when racked of any gun I can think of and has a certain...style...exposed hammer etc....Love old shotguns but the crunchie mossberg in the safe is more reliable...

I had a bad experience with a 97 when I was young and maladroit. Proved the "Thumbuster" part of the name.

My 12 was supposedly a prison gun - it's got a number painted on the stock.

Whatever gun I am currently carrying goes under my pillow at night. I have a Surefire light and extra mag on my headboard.

When I remember to take it out of my safe (because I put it away before I leave the next morning), I keep my 7-shot Remington 870 with a Surefire foregrip on the side of my bed. It is loaded with alternating slugs and 00-buck.

No holster. Guns are cocked and locked though.
