Default Great article a friend sent me

Subject: Great Police Quote!
Florida's got it right. Bravo for Sheriff Judd!!!

POLKCOUNTYFLORIDA SHERIFF GRADY JUDD

Some "dirtbag" in Polk County Florida who got pulled over in a routine traffic stop ended up "executing" the deputy who stopped him. The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range. Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed.
A statewide manhunt ensued. The low-life was found hiding in a wooded area with his gun. SWAT team officers fired and hit the guy 68 times.

Now here's the kicker: Naturally, the media asked why they shot him 68 times. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, told the Orlando Sentinel:

"That's all the bullets we had!"

(Talk about an all time classic answer; I LOVE IT!!

Now if Polk County would please bill the dirtbag's family for those 68 rounds....

Good quote.

Sad to hear that he was able murder the deputy and dog before he got what was coming. And to think it all started with a simple speeding stop. Just goes to show you that you can never let your guard down.

Thats not the whole quote. It doesn't sound as brash properly quoted.

"That's all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more. Quite frankly, we weren't taking any chances."

Good for her (and you). Patience most often pays off. You just have to keep softening her up.

From the Washington Post website

Autopsy: 110 Rounds Shot at Fla. Suspect
The Associated Press
Saturday, September 30, 2006; 11:01 PM

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Officers fired 110 rounds of ammunition at the man suspected of killing a sheriff's deputy, according to an autopsy and records released by the sheriff's office Saturday........

......"You have to understand, he had already shot and killed a deputy, he had already shot and killed a K-9 and he shot and injured another deputy," Judd said by phone Saturday. "Quite frankly, we weren't taking any chances."

Ten SWAT officers surrounded Freeland on Friday as he hid beneath brush and a fallen tree in a rural area. Authorities say he raised the gun belonging to the deputy he had killed, prompting nine officers to fire.

"I suspect the only reason 110 rounds was all that was fired was that's all the ammunition they had," Judd said. "We were not going to take any chance of him shooting back.".....

From the Washington Post... OK... not as liberal as some... but they still published it!

When I first saw that article I posted it in the booking area at our jail. I wanted each guy who actually went 10-15 to see that there are still some great places that support their guys fully. Sadly Deputies are killed as they do not always get the proper training from their departments who choose to spend money on many other things than training.

GlockHoliday, you shot courses of fire on this Sunday at FTA that most Deputies in LA County have never shot before. They are given just enough training at the Academy to satisfy POST requirements and then thrown out to handle the real world on their own (usually one man cars) after sitting idle in jail for 1-8 years. Some will go train, most will rely on shooting 70 rounds per year at their qualifiers. Add that with being behind the power curve of many adversaries (you can't always have your gun out on everyone before they come out on you) and you have sheer luck that prevents many LEO's from an untimely career ending OIS.

Good find on the article.

I am truly fortunate to work for a dept. that has a good bullet budget... our officers avg. 100-200 rounds a month... and the training staff.... me and others can use all we can shoot...within reason...

And my guess is "reason" is relative and discretionary (yours, of course).

It's refreshing to see that there are still some leaders in law enforcement that say what needs to be said without worrying about the PC aspects. Utah is similar....when I lived there I don't remember seeing any 2 hour car chases....like they have here. It's a shame that if this guy ran a department in So Cal the liberal media would run him out of town.
