I was visiting a girl friend's house today. We were sitting on the couch, with our backs to the door, watching a movie when 2 guys opened the door and walked in. I had removed my paddle holster with the Sig P220 and set in a nearby chair. When the door started to open, I was up and had the pistol out of the holster and had taken my stance with the pistol pointed at the floor, before they got the second step. I experienced the hearing loss and tunnel vision, as I didn't really hear, or at least register what they said, and I was concentrating on center of mass and didn't really see their faces clearly. They were gone in a flash. The girl friend said they said that they thought they were entering a friends house and they were told to just walk in. However they went straight back to their SUV and left the neighborhood.
The girl friend is in her fifties, as am I, and has lived their for a while, the neighborhood is not the best, and I don't believe their story, I think if she had been there alone it would have been a different story.
The positives are these: (1) she said that I moved so fast that she didn't even realize that I had left the couch until she saw me standing there holding the gun, (2) I was ready and under control, I didn't point the gun at anyone and no shots were fired, and the situation was resolved. (3) I shoot 500+ rounds a week and use my range time to train myself for such situations, I was calm and alert and felt confident in my gun and my ability to shoot quickly and accurately if necessary, (4) She was scared, but glad I had the gun and the training and will to use it, this moved her further into the progun/proself defense camp.
She said the expression on my face scared her almost as much as the guys coming in the door.
I am thankful for my concealed carry permit, I am thankful for my right to keep and bear arms, I am fortunate that I have been able to take advantage of plenty of range time at my local club. I am fortunate to have a quality firearm that I have confidence in to operate reliably and shoot accurately.
Antother reason to go after the CCW permit.

Good story, but one thing comes to mind that everyone should remember. Always lock your door, even when you are home.

You nailed it Spicy. For the life of me I cannot figure out why ANYBODY would be dumb enough to sit around the house with the doors unlocked so the latest parolee from San Quinten can just stroll right in and reek havoc. My wife thought I was some kind of a nut case until one morning some bottom feeder appeared at our locked back screen door (we live in the country and the house is about 200 yrds off the road) and tried to open the door while whining, "Can I use your phone, my car broke down"!! I didn't have a gun at that end of the house so I mustered up my best command voice and scared him off. Need less to say I now have a gun at that end of the house and my wife has more tolerance for my security efforts.

My parent's house has been robbed 4 times that I know of. One time the scumbag walked through by parents house, unhooked their laptop put it in the case and walked out the door. All while my mom was home. (yes the laptop was visible from an outside window). Yet my parents still do not lock their doors, have a security system or have ANY firearms.

I installed electronic locks on my doors because of my step daughters propensity to lose keys. Side benefit is that it is always locked.

Default Security system

I live in the OC in downtown Huntington Beach. We get all sorts of individuals wandering around, especially in the summer. We have even had people knock at the door to use the restroom. The rule is NO! Of course they use the lawn or bushes and by the time the PD arrives they are long gone. I had a security system installed which has a feature that when any door to the outside is opened, the system chirps. I also have a gate on the walkway into the house. It also chirps, so when anyone visits or otherwise enters, we know it.
Finally, we rescued a husky/shepard/wof mix from the pound, and she has become the best security system around.

Feeling relatively secure in Surf City

I just had someone try and break into my house yesterday, they broke a window which gave them access to my garage, fortunatly there was another pane behind it with steel mesh that held, also a human can not fit though said window. I am now installing steel bars over the window. Unfortunatly in Laguna Beach there is a lot of day labor, need I say more.

They must have cased my place because I usually have a large rabid dog in the garden who would have eaten them and draged their bodies back to his bed. He goes to day care on certain days. Yes I have decided to change those days.

Don't get sucked into your local hype. Most burglars (or at least the majority of the ones I have come across) aren't the day labor type. They are the no labor type. Most of them are the meth and rock type. And if they are casing your place they are more then likely your neighbors.

Default Good Points

As I said in a previous post I live in downtown HB and there are a number of older apartments and small homes that, unfortunately, house an element of our society that is predatory and parasitic. The characters that I keep an eye on are those late 20-somethings covered with tats and riding skateboards. Don't jump on me for tats, they can have a purpose, but when I see the same characters floating around the streets on skateboards, I wonder who is paying the bills.

I have had “them” ask me to use my restroom. Then get upset or ask for money when I said no. I try to stay away from the Beach and down town area after dark.

Default The beach after dark

Actually downtown HB has changed quite a bit in the last several years. There was a time when the local white power groups hung out on the corners and really drove off the clientle. A lot of that has changed with the upgrades in hotels, retaurants, and watering holes. There still are a few bad actors around but a lot of families frequent downtown, particularly on "locals night" or Tuesday. They block off Main Street, and have street vendors and entertainers. It is fun. Most places give 20% off food and bevereges.

That doesn't say there isn't an element that needs to be watched and the HBPD does maintain a foot presence. I worry more about what goes on in the local "hoods" than downtown.
