Default Edged Weapons

This is an aging thread, but I thought I should comment on the edged weapons item. Since the late 60's I have been training in Philippine escrima, a martial arts system that covers grappling, the full range of kicking/striking techniques, and edged weapons - in fact the art starts with edged weapons and most of the progressions are based on weapons techniques. Also, in the early 70's I was involved in counterinsurgency operations in an area where terrorist activity often took the form of knife or machete attacks.

As I work my way towards my CCW, I have to tell you that in my mind a trained man with a blade is every bit as dangerous as a BG with a firearm at close quarters.

There is a video out there that was produced several years ago, I think the title was "Survivig Edged Weapons," and it was intended for LEOs. One of the masters in Escrima, Danny Inosanto, helped produce it and was in the video. If you can get it, watch it.

Years ago Massad Ayoob commented on the number of news stories where a victim has been stabbed more than 50 times. You rarely hear of anyone who's been shot more than 50 times.

Where is your Dojo? I'm in OC and not well experienced in martial arts, but I've been looking for a form to start with. Some friends have been suggesting the Gracie studio off the 5.

Sorry to tell you this, you are very wrong. A knife is MORE deadly that a handgun. It does not need to be pointed at you to be thrown. You have it hidden behind you hand and you throw it underarm. They will not see it coming.

Remember the Indiana Jones movie with the sword guy? I agree with his response.

I'm not an instructor of any sort, but I have to agree with CCWI's statement. A knife will make you just as dead, generally just as quickly. Unlike a firearm, you will most likely NEVER hear it or see it coming. The Tueller Drill (or similar drills) are very, very enlightening and highlight the need for good awareness.

There is a reason why fighting knives have been around since the ages... and persist even after the invention of the gun.

Default Knives

Bombard - I don't want to be seen as plugging anyone, but Danny Sullivan's place in Sky Park Circle is a great place to start (www.ockickboxing.com), and his Kali-Silat classes work extensive edged weapons drills.

I will gladly yield to CCWI and others on releative "deadliness" of knives vs. firearms. A trained knife-fighter with the proper mindset is very difficult to deal with, as our own military found out in the Philippines during the Huk rebellion.

I have spoken with a veteran EMS professional who states that he prefers gun shot wounds to knife wounds. He will send someone else if he can get away with it when the call comes in for a knife fight. Not only do you have a multi dimensional threat, where a gun is either a straight line from the muzzle or an impact weapon, but a knife also can change direction after entry(which I understand is very common). I consider a knife to be more dangerous than a gun, and I'm sure that in the right hands it's quite the manstopper also.

Obviously you guys don't watch enough TV!

A gun is MUCH more dangerous. In part, because it can go off with no provocation or intervention....

That was sarcasm.

The Gracie studios with brazillian Jujitsu focuses on ground fighting techniques. While VERY effective if it gets to that, however, the last place I would want to be is rolling on the ground with a BG.

I remember something to the effect that knives could pierce through old style Kevlar vests, surely that has been addressd the new technology vests, right?

Default Knife fight

I am aware of an incident in north county where a women stabbed a guy in a parking lot altercation. She stabbed him once, cutting an artery. His friend, a Navy corpman assigned to the Marines, could not save him even though he had his combat first aide kit in his car trunk. As CCWI stated, knives are very deadly. My .02 is, if confronted with a person with a knife, get as much distance away as you can from him/her. Live to tell the story.

A friend of mine just lost a very good friend due to a sword attack in his home. He was a retired LEO and held multiple black belts in two or three disciplines. His son-in-law came over unanounced, grabbed a tropy sword off the wall (a katana) and began attacking him in his bed. His femoral artery was severed and he bled out quite quickly.

From what I see by the pistoleros at the range .... distance from threat helps with a firearm as well.....
