Default Was my home just cased?

At 6:45 this morning I heard my doorbell. By the time I got up and got to the door (there is a big window by the door) I saw a female looking around and walk away. I don't know what made me think of it, but I then looked into the back yard and saw the same girl open my gate and look around the yard. At this point I called the cops and they came out to investigate. Yes I went to the door with a gun hidden behind my back.

Forward to 9:30 and the doorbell goes off again. The same girl. Gun in hand I ask her through the window what she wants. She asks for some guy I've never heard of, first name only. She lets me know she's sorry and goes. As she is going she's looking around and heads down a side street and then down the alley. Cops are called again and they go after her. I haven't heard from the cops this time.

My wife is nervous about being home alone today even with the alarm and a gun by her. I can understand why.

You and the wife need to be extra vigilant.
Call the PD back and inquire if they talked to the suspicious woman. Also request extra patrol. Let them know your wife is concerned and alone today.

Yup. You got cased.

How long have you lived there? I am curious in if a person who may have lived there before you might have attracted THOSE kind of people.

I let the officer know that my wife would be home today by herself and was nervous so that part is taken care of.

I've been in the home six years and the prior people built it in 1948 and were an elderly couple who were not that kind of couple to be around her type.

I just got to take a ride in a cop car to ID the girl. They picked her up with someone else's mail in hand, a car full of stuff, and drugs on her. They know her by first and last name. Her cell phone had text messages to another person saying that she had found a place and was keeping an eye on it and was being careful, yeah right. It turns out that a couple of days ago a garage two houses up was broken into and the items in her car may be theirs. I did a citizens arrest for them so she is off to jail tonight.

Great! At least you got her in jail for now...Maybe that will keep your area safe for now.

Glad to hear she got caught. Still, be aware of your surroundings. Hopefully her 'friend' won't be coming around looking for opportunities in your neighborhood.

Great job in showing her that your neighborhood is a hostile work environment for her.

In this situation, if I have not shot them or detained them, I take their picture with my phone.

I have lots of pictures and NO repeat visitors.

This is really an outstanding demonstration of situational awareness, listening to your gut instincts, and taking appropriate actions. Not over-reaction, but due diligence. Glad you two have come through it without incident so far. I'm sure you'll keep up the surveillance considering the partner is still at large. Thanks for sharing your story. Important for us all.

When a similar thing happened to my wife 20+ years ago, we got robbed a couple of days later. The neighbors said they saw the truck and figured we were moving or something. I did when I could.

The camera thing is smart. Being obvious with a camera taking THEIR picture is a big deterrent in itself. And you get to shoot - a picture, that is.
