About an hour, the house, completely black with no lights on except for the computer screen in my room which isn't seen from the street. No porch light either. I hear a hard solid knock on the door. I grab my glock and talking through the door I ask who it was and it was someone wanting to talk to me about something. I asked who it was and he gave me his name and asked if I'd open the door. I told him that I didn't know him and that I wasn't interested. He goes, It'll only take a minute. I'm like.. I'm not interested.. just go away man. I grab my phone and call the SO to get them in the area. Told dispatch what happened and thought it was odd because the house was dark. Told her I thought it was an effort to gain entry to the house. 45 minutes later, SO comes out. Granted it was a low priority call but maybe the guy is one block over right now with a family tied up.

Door to door salespersons usually don't call at 4AM. Waking someone up early tends to predispose them against accepting a sales offer. Such calls would be in the morning or afternoon if catering to the "lady of the house" or early evening when customers may be expected to be home. Or by appointment.
So yes, probably a cover story. |

I agree it was a good call. I had the same sort of thing happen about a year ago. Around midnight my step-son heard a knock at the door and he thought it was one of his goofy friends and answered the door. When he opened it there were two people running away behind the garage, then jumped the fence. We figured they were testing to see if the house was vacant.
To Gunter and Karatediver, where did you get 4AM? Eric

I have had that happen late at night. I am certain if I don't know you, it's dark out, and your knocking on my door your a bad guy. Unless there is an obvious emergency like a fire or something else crazy.
I had a cop knock on my door a few weeks ago late at night. He didn't announce, and my blinds were closed. I went and got my gun before checking. He was serving a subpoena, lol. Even during the day my friends don't drop by unexpected. So I usually only answer the door armed. Especially after our robbery in December. |

![]() The reason I asked is he posted at 9:08 PM last night. He started his post with "About an hour," and I assumed he meant,"About an hour ago," which would make the occurance at about 8PM. Nowhere else in the post was the time of the even stated.

A buddy of mine in Merced a few weeks ago had his house hit mid-afternoon, nobody home and the dirt bags got away with computers, cash, jewelry etc... That was on a Monday. Three days later @ 0530 hrs. doorbell goes off in rapid succession about 6X. Buddy's wife gets up (yes, I know, we discussed this) and she went to the door thinking it was her walking partner. Porch light was off, when she lit the porch up someone ran away, hopped in a car and beat feet outa there. We all know why they were there. Just read an article recently that there are 8,000 home invasions in North America daily! Being prepared is the best defense and assuming it's a bad guy is the best way to be ready. Glad the OP was suspicious and didn't fall for the ploy, (whatever time it happened, LOL).

Scenarios like this story are the ones which scare me the most. The best outcome I could hope for would be that my Wife manages to get filthy rich from my wrongful death.

Kinda similar sort of thing happened on halloween when I lived in lovely downtown Arleta in San Fernando Valley.
2:00 Am, knock on the door, "Trick or Treat". Now, at 2AM the house was dark, but I had 4 friends over so I opened the door. There stood a 6'5" black guy with no costume, just an empty pillowcase repeating "Trick or Treat". It was like a scene out of a Hollywood movie! As I stood there with my buddies who all look like big hairy bikers I told him we had no candy left, he looked us up and down, then decided he'd better move on. Weird....probably should have called the LAPD...
