Default East Kern Home Burgulary

THE THREAD TITLE HAS BEEN CHANGED PER THE REQUEST OF THE THREAD ORIGINATOR. - GunSlut 12/21/11

Merry Christmas!

Welp, I spoke to a California City PD Detective today. I left with my family, unnanounced about 1:40 PM, And arrived home at 4:50 PM.

When I arrived home I put my key in the door, and realized it was not locked. My wife had locked it when we left, so I just assumed she did not double check like I do.

We had just bought some clothes and such, so my family plops down in the living room, 3 yr old daughter, 10 mo old son, and I continue into the bedroom to change into the new clothes.

I walk into the bedroom and notice nothing a miss, but I was uneasy for some reason. It took me a second, but I looked at my nightstand and realized a larg iphone speaker dock was missing. I became very defensive, and called my wife into the room with the kids. I knew the room was clear of intruders because I could see all aspects of it where I stood, and could see clearly down the hall.

I was concerned that I did not know when my house was comprimised, and I could have spooked someone into hiding. I did not want my family to get hurt in an attempt to flee, or if that was the intent to begin with.

I was carrying while out, and still had my sidearm. I had my wife call the police while I made sure the house was safe. It was.

On reflection it had to be a teenager. Only small electronics. A xbox 360, the iphone dock, and a laptop computer. Jewelry, instruments, kids presents, larger computers, flat screen tv, etc were all still present. So an on the foot kinda hit it fast thing.

Onto the encounter with LEO though. A Detective showed up, and I decided because I was edgy I would go ahead and inform him, be a nice guy, and tbh see his reaction. So I said I wanted to bring something up for his and my safety, I am armed, and I have a ccw even though it is not required on my property.

He said ok, I dont blame you. Did not ask where, what, to see permits, nothing...pretty good LEO response in my opinion.

So turns out my wife forgot to lock the deadbolt, and the door got jimmyed open. That one security measure could have prevented it.

All jewelry was left, my small gun safe was left, I am sure there was more, but we are trying to figure out whats up.

well, good start to chrismtas.

Glad no one was hurt. Only thing I'd recommend is not to explore the house. Stay put in one rom and wait for LE. Remember that if they're hiding, they're
laying in wait (an extreme advantage for them) You don't know how many, how long, and where. I don't know of any LEO's that will clear a house alone. It's a common mistake made and it's hard to fight the urge to look.

Not a typical definition of an invasion where they busted in while you were home, but none the less unnerving just the same! Sucks moist cheese and I'm sure the violation of your castle is more of a shock than the missing item. As they say, could've been much worse. Nobody died and a reinforcement to the Mrs. and others that read this to double check locks as it might have stopped them or slowed them down enough to look elsewhere. At any rate, don't let it ruin the holiday, keep your faith in the good in people out there and continue to carry for the ones that aren't! .

LEO took about 25 minutes to get here, sorry but I am not going to sit and wait for a a BG to figure out a plan. Yeah it may have been a bad idea to search, but in my opinion giving the guy more time is also a bad idea. No win situation, get it? There was an article posted about altercations with bg's a few months back that said time is in their favor.

If there were people in my house at the time I walked in, they were in hiding, and knew where my family was. I did not know where they were. They could hear my wife freaking out, quiet verbally, and could have easily mustered a plan in those 25 minutes. If we posted up my plan would be wife and kids in the master bath, and myself in the back of the room and wait...

Just ****ty situation all around.

I am sure it would have stopped it. Tool marks on the front door, and the lock and handle are jacked...I am sure if they had to kick it in during broad daylight they would have opted for a safer house to hit.

The biggest shock was being on opposite sides of the house than my family when I knew someone had been in there. I dont know when/if they are still there. I did go right into serious business mode, dealt with my wife freaking out and all, got my family safest I could. But I work as an LEO, so some of that I learned along the way.

It is also worth mentioning, as soon as I was SURE it was clear to the front door the wife and kids were in the car driving to families as i waited for PD. They didnt even take overnight bags, she is on the way to deal with that right now.

Hey now, some scum invaded my house. Home invasion in my book, at least in the heat of posting. I tried to edit it to burglary, but I guess the time limit is up or something? I will fiddle with it some more.

Insurance company said since my house is not secure (I think they may have recovered a spare key, and the hardware store is closed) that they will have some emergency late night claims adjuster contact me tonight. IDK if thats to set up a hotel for the family, or to get me some locks or whatever. I will see.

PD pulled 3 prints, but I am reallistic on that. They are probably mine or family. I will look at that aspect as the lottery. Seems like nothing important was taken. Electronics can be replaced. We are still looking, they tossed the place. I will post some pics soon I think

So I am probably going to bump this a million times, just anxious and not sleeping tonight for sure.

Just got dinner and started searching. County (work) Phone is missing, they have been notified. Also our video camera. found a couple more missing games and such. Still looking. We have too much crap btw, time for a goodwill run when we are done I think, lol

Also lets bring out the good part, they PD officer was supportive of me carrying, and could really care less.

Some pics:

Its hard to see, but the crack between fixtures is pretty deep. The front of the molding is missing now for the bottom fixture, and you can see some tool marks. The screws are just gone. Poof.

So they used something to jimmy it, and it just popped out. It free floats in there, and you can see how far out they made the whole assembly come by how much of the hole is visible. I dont know if the door is still servicable, I will have to find out when replacing the locks.

The insurance company stated we have 250 bucks to replace locks. I have 3 doors with deadbolts, and one with just handles. So I should be able to get some decent locks to replace these with. I will see what I can do in the morning, which I took off BTW.

This is where my poor xbox 360 used to reside. She is clearly gone, and it is smothered in fingerprint powder. 2 prints recovered from the glass, and one from the dvd in view, not hopefull though.

And the final pic I will be posting as of now is one of our dressers, drawers pulled out, and stuff dumped on the floor. I guess they were looking for hidden money?

Still figuring stuff out, just taking a break. Nothing else thus far, well actually I realized they emptied out a large duffle bag, probably to carry everything.

So Insurance is working it out. I checked my router logs, and laptop disapeared at 15:42:13, so that gives a better time frame. I have the laptop set to auto connect, i secured the rest of my network, but kept the same password. I think it is someone on my block. So if they turn it on it will connect. It will not pinpoint who took it, but if it does hit it will mean a wopping 8 houses to chose from.

Longshot but it gives me some peace of mind.

I called Microsoft and had the xbox stored CC deactivated on the entire account, no problem. They are going to record log ins and such because if they turn it on and connect it to the internet it will auto connect to my account. Nothing they can damage there, and it will record an IP. Another long shot but these guys need to be caught. I have the reference numbers and such to give to the PD in the morning.

I have tommorow off. So I am going to replace those locks first thing, and then worry about going through the rest of my house with a finetooth comb. I am really on edge though. They left the big screen TV and such, I am really concerned they may get cocky and come back to finish the job.

The camera is a clear loss. Work tracks the phones, but they would have to turn it back on. It was a cheap POS so I am suprised they even took it. If they get caught though that will be the bigger deal item, government property.

Again, they left my small gun safe. So the guns I had at home are still here. They also didnt mess with my work firearms. They did throw my vest on the ground, and go through the pockets of my last work shirt randomly. Nothing there but a notepad, a pen, and handcuff keys. its all still there too anyways.

All my CC's are still adequately hidden, and the jewelry is intact as stated before.

Kids presents were not stolen, we didnt get much but I think that would have been devestating.

I will probably install a wifi security survailance system with offsite backup by the end of the year with this. The hardware is 300 bucks through neweggg, the software is like 50, and I already have web hosting that is compatible, so that price is negligible.

I am glad that none of your family was hurt. I understand, from experience, that it is very unnerving to be stolen from and do not blame you for being on edge. But I am glad that your family is safe.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Glad everyone is safe. Everything else is just stuff.

If you have to replace the door, they make real nice steel doors now (steel over solid wood). If the door is still sound, you should add the steel reinforcing plates:

2-3/4 in. x 1-3/4 in. Stainless Steel Door Reinforcer-2258-SS at The Home Depot
