I was wondering if CCW was responsible for leniency from LEO on traffic stops. I experienced this myself a number of years ago. My fault, I was driving brand new car (less than 400 miles on it) and not completely aware of my speed on a rural road. Only other car on the road all morning was a LEO coming other way, who whipped around and stopped me. I was in business suit, didn't look alike a criminal, did not pose any sort of threat to him or anything. I was smiling and very calm with my hands clamped to the steering wheel! He asked for everything, I gave him that plus CCW. He went back to car for a LONG time (maybe 15 minutes!), but came back and gave me a lecture on going 74 in a 55 and let me go. He was also shaking.

It may be that you'll often just get a warning if you have a CCW, but we should not expect that. Having a CCW is not a Get Out of Jail Free card for tickets and other things. Let's not treat it like a Good Ol' Boys Club. If the LEO is nice enough to let you off with a warning, be thankful, but resolve to be more responsible in the future and obey the traffic laws. Part of getting a CCW is showing that you are a responsible, law-abiding person. Let's do our best to maintain that reputation.

I don't think I'd want to be pulled over on a holiday. The LEOs (and I really love'em) just might be a little resentful about drawing duty on a holiday and less inclined to give out breaks.

I know that I'm in Colo and that has little relevance in Cal, but we were cautioned in our CCH class about receiving moving violations, speeding in particular, especially in certain counties. Seems some Colorado County Sheriffs view this as a disregard of the responsibilities that go along with having a CCH permit and have been known to revoke the CCHs of residents of their counties who have been ticketed for speeding.

Also during the holidays LEOs are looking for reasons to pull people over because they are looking for people Driving Under The Influence. If you show a good attitude and they can tell you have not been drinking, they sometimes will not want to spend any more time on you, so they can get back out on the street and find some drunks.

I know some departments have officers out there dedicated to catching people DUI. Again, especially during the holidays. Not to say if you cop an attitude that you aren't going to get a ticket regardless.

Not to brag but it seems to me I have gotten out of more tickets for either the CCW or having my fire chiefs badge. Is this common courtesy with LEO?
I can almost guarantee that is why you didn't get a ticket; not the CCW license. He may have also been in a good mood and knew you couldn't go to traffic school for the ticket.

The truth. It's refreshing to hear it once in a while.

For anybody else out there.....tell me you REALLY haven't looked down as soon as you saw the flashing lights in your rearview mirror.

If you really have no idea how fast you were going, maybe some traffic school will reinforce the importance of paying attention. Alas, I digress.

Respect. Again, it's refreshing to hear it once in a while.

I think those two things are what got you out of a citation. Not anything else.

Not sure why people do not show respect to a LEO that is doing his job. What can I say? There are people out there that are ego maniac a******! Hey they get what they deserve and the respect showing individual sometimes gets a break.

Ditto. I never treat a traffic ticket lightly, but always with respect to the officer. Even if you feel the ticket was not warranted, arguing the finer points of the vehicle code and traffic law at the curb will not get you anywhere.

Maybe i'm a little sheltered, but how stupid do you have to be to NOT show respect to the officer that can right you up? We have WAY to many stupid people in society. Someone needs to buy more chlorine for the gene pool.

Nice to see you .45.

When I have been pulled over I will bust out the chap stick and start kissin' some azz! Tickets are expensive! I had one Deputy ask me if I was saying "No Sir or Yes Sir" to his question to get out of a ticket. I said: "No Sir!"

Funny thing is I have done that all my life and have never been let off a ticket.

Well actually only one time, when I worked the grave yard shift at my dad's bakery way back when and was pulled over at 1 AM for a license plate bulb that was burnt out as I left my neighborhood. Officer told me there had been a lot of construction material theft near my house. This was when Tustin Ranch was being built up.

Once he realized I could not fit very many 2X4s in a 1971 VW Bug, "or I assume" was not intoxicated, he let me go with a "have a nice night".

Again mucho respect by me to him.

One time I was on my way to an off road shop (trying to get there before they closed) to look at parts for my truck and was in the fast lane when I came up on a car going about 60 mph. I went to change lanes and glanced back to see if the lane was clear. There was a black car just behind me in the next lane. I had just enough room to cut in front of the black car so that I could pass the car in front of me. I make my move and accelerate to about 85. Clear freeway ahead! Something caught my eye in the rear view mirror. Flashing red and blue lights! That black car was a CHP patrol car! I pulled over, rolled my windows down, pulled out my wallet and registration and placed them and my hands on the dash. CHP officer walks up and asks:

CHP: Who do you work for?
Me: What?
CHP: What agency do you work for?
Me: I work at Parker.
CHP: You’re not a cop?!
Me: No.
CHP: Why are your hands on the dash and all your windows down?
Me: I was just trying to make your job easier and I don’t want any misunderstandings. (That’s where the chap stick comes into play!)

He asks me if I knew that was him that I cut off to get around that car. I said, “If I knew it was a cop I wouldn’t have done it!”
He said, “Slow down and have a nice day.”
I said, “REALLY!”
He laughed and walked back to his car. Must have been the surprised look on my face.

Never put hands on dash, it says ex-con. Hands on wheel, 11 and 1.
