Lightbulb At the Doc's Office

I carry one of the weapons on my permit at all times unless it is illegal or highly inappropriate to do so. My wife and I had the flu or something so we went to the local family care walk in medical place near our house. In the course of examining me, the doctor asked me to raise my shirt so he could listen to my lungs. My first thought was "CRAP", I don't want to shock the doc by uncovering a 1911 Style 45 Auto as an unexpected surprize. I thought for a split second, then informed him that I wanted to make an anouncement prior to removing my shirt as not to startle him. He looked a me a bit strangely, then said "OK". I then said that I held a Concealed Weapons Permit, and that I was carrying a firearm at the time. Before he could respond, I asked if he would like to see the permit, not wanting him to have to ask, or just take my word for it. He looked at the permit and thanked me for informing him in advance. I placed the gun in my wife's purse and left it there until we left the examination room. A week or so later, we returned for a follow up exam with the same doctor. It was as if the whole thing never happened. When you first get the CCW, your weapon is like a new growth on your body of which you are always aware. After some time, it becomes like an article of clothing as far as physical awareness, and is therefore not always in the front of your mind. The situation could have been avoided had I thought about it and left the weapon in the car, or put it in my wife's purse and carried the purse for her. It helps to think about the fact that you are carrying and evaluate in advance how that fact may complicate your day.

BTW I guess that is the best you can do to explain it. But don't be too freaked. He probably runs into that on occasion with LEO etc. Good job.

It sounds as if you handled it well.

My doc and I have trained, qualified together and we see each other at the range sometimes. It is cool his being an avid shooter.

I am also lucky to have a gun freindly doctor. It seems that when I do have to go in, we talk firearms first and exams last.

When they take your weight, to keep your medical records updated, does the doc ever suggest diet and exercise after the visit?
When I go in for a full exam versus a check up, my clothing and everything I wear could weight up to nine pounds. I understand that around the 5 lb range is normal for just everyday clothes and shoes etc.

I have a very liberal female doctor...so it is either locked up in the truck or in my pocket...or pursed if my wife is with me until we get ready to leave.

Actually....her medical students do the examining....and for some odd reason,, they are always these really beautiful...and I mean REALLY beautiful women from the university's med school. We are always amazed by this when we go to see the doc. I've never been disappointed.

Totally worth it.

Similar story.
I went to the ER a couple years ago for some stitches on my thumb. Handyman accident. Forgot all about my G27 IWB until it was too late. It's easy to do. It becomes so natural to have a pistol on you all the time after carrying for a while.
Nobody was the wiser. Got lucky I guess.

Default CHP Motor Officer/HOV Lane

Howdy:

This morning (11-07-07) while riding in the HOV lane on my 01 Heritage Softail Classic eastbound (Southern CA) 91 fwy from Gardena to my Orange office, I was behind a smoking car and noticed droplets of oil appearing on my windscreen. I also noted on several overpasses, yellow do not cross painted stripes were covered by new blacktop so when I approached the Downey Ave exit, it exited the HOV via blacktop area and re-entered the HOV near the Bellflower exit again in a blacktop area passing the smoking car. A very short while later, in my right hand mirror a CHP motor officer was closing quickly and he crossed the yellow painted stripes behind me and turned on his lights. He motioned me to pull over and I shortly exited the HOV again in a blacktop area.

After pulling over, the CHP officer approached requesting CDL/Registration but didn't indicate why he stopped me. While my hands were still on the handlebar, I informed the officer I had a valid CA (required by issuing permit authority) CCW permit and a listed permit weapon (Kahr PM 9) was in an OWB holster at my 3:30 position. I also informed the officer my wallet containing the requested information was in my waistband at the 11:30 position. The officer looked at me like "a gun-toting biker?" and asked me to retrieve the requested documents incuding permit then told me to place my hands back on my handlebar.

He backtracked to his bike (didn't turn his back on me), did his "thing" and came back to me informing me I had crossed the double yellow stripes and was going to issue me a ticket. I politely informed him from his vantage point he probably missed when I exited and entered the HOV lanes there weren't any painted yellow lines and reminded him after he motioned me to pull over, I exited the HOV again in a new blacktop area. While thinking about what I said, I commented to him if I did receive a citation, I wanted him to make it immediately possible for me to take photos (cell phone camera) of the areas I entered/exited the HOV lane. I suggested to him my photos would prove in court there were no visable yellow painted stripes and there was a distinct possibility CalTrans would paint the yellow stripes on the blacktop during issuing citation and court date!

He then had a smile on his face, handed my documents back to me and said "you are go to go"! Hmm, I presented my case and was willing to back it up with photos but taking my photos would require him to initiate a traffic stop to allow my photos to be taken safely for court "evidence".

Uh... Levi.... that was an interesting story and I enjoyed reading it, but it's way way way off topic. This is a "Doc's Office" thread. I thought maybe the smoking car was going to make you crash and you end up in front of a doctor or something...but no doctor ever showed up in the story.

I am indeed fortunate ... My Doc has a stand/tray/table thingee next to the scales... that's so all of the cops and ccw holders can put all of their hardware on the table while they weigh in... the nurse always just looks at me an rolls her eyes....hahahahaha... but I am too fat anyway and by the time the gun, mags, knives...yes plural, cell phone, keys etc. hits the table, I suddenly don't feel so fat..heavy...stout...whatever
