Default Gas station in San Bernardino

On my way back from vacation, my vehicle started making a rather worrysome rattle. Being that I maintain all my vehicles and I just put this one through 6 days of hell, I figured I should pull over so that my last 100 miles out of 700+ will not be spent on a flatbed cause I neglected to address and issue as it arises.

Anyways, I pull off the freeway at the San Bernardino airport area and pull into the Shell gas station. Being that I did not need to take gas I figured that I will just pull right by the light against some sort of a wall fence thing. Big mistake. Why? Because right by the wall, there were bushes and a telephone. As soon as I got out of the vehicle and started getting ready to look underneath, someone stepped out from behind the bushes. Spoke very little English and was rather.... what's the word.... rugged looking and insistent about something. Even though my vehicle was still not checked out, I decided to relocate fast. I must say that it was comforting to know that I have something to fall back on, but I was pissed at myself for missing him in those bushes! I should have seen him coming sooner.

Anyways, it's just a heads up for folks to be careful and if you do need to make a stop at night, stop at the distributor, even if you are not filling up. That area is way better lit and way more exposed from all areas showing all the approach angles.

Sounds to me that you might have been more tired than you thought. But you are right, it is probably best to try and maintain situational awareness . . especially at night. Hope you had a good vacation. Welcome home.

You know, that is another good point. I was at the tail end of a 700+ mile drive and in my vehicle, I do get to stick to the speed limit cause it does not go that fast. So adding a tired brain into the equation, it's easy to miss things.

No, because the guy wandered off as I got into my jeep.

Cause they had an unusually low speed limit at that point. Also it is always faster on the way out then the way back

Utah in a Jeep? Can you say Moab? We love running the Moab trails in our Jeep.

That's where I spent 6 days wheeling. I do it every year for the past 5 years or so. HellsRevent (with HellsGate and Escalator), Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Bar and Golden Spike with the Golden Crack, Green Day @ Area BFE, Cliffhanger to name a few places I got to hang out this year

For shame!! To speak ill of one of the 'gateways' to the beautiful City of San Bernardino!!!!!!

I don't recall a single trip past that area (I10/Tippecanoe Ave) that we have not seen pan-handlers getting in folks faces at the off ramp right next to that Shell gas station.

Ditto Hygyliac, but also:

Bad outcome: incident, mistake, oops!

Good outcome: lesson, new enlightenment!

Very glad this one ended well.

For future postings, I prefer "ruggedly handsome."
