Great!! Now I have THAT to worry about. Thanks...

You did good Keith !

I've had a close family member tell me I was over reacting to CCW all the time.

This just shows you that you never know.

You never know, Keith. Better safe than sorry. I hope he has enough sense to never show up at your place again. Did you sleep outside with your stuff that night?

I hope you reported the event to the police. They would have put a patrol to swing by from time to time and if you had called right away, they might have been able to pick up the guy.

I happened to wake up in the wee hours one morning (my dog barked which she rarely did) and saw some guys looking in the back of my neighbors truck. I went out on our balcony and yelled at them and the guy driving their car, took off. The other guy ran like mad and a neighbors motion sensor light lit up and he changed direction (and likely wet his pants). I didn't report it to the cops cause I didn't think they could do anything (nothing taken). I talked to a cop later and he said they could have stopped the vehicle if they found it based on my description (it was unique) and searched it for other stolen goods. So I screwed up by not reporting it.

Thanks for all the support guys. We can never know his motives, but after what I went through last year, better safe than sorry. We almost always have someone at the house unless we go out to celebrate something with dinner. When we aren't home, Pepper is a 65# junkyard dog who, while he is a big sissy, makes a LOT of noise whenever someone comes around. He looks absolutely vicious, but he is a big baby.

We also have a house alarm that we use at night and when we are on vacation or out on the town. I feel pretty secure at home, but I don't want to be caught by surprise, like I was with this guy.

Anyone gets caught on my property with intent to do harm is gonna be in a world of hurt. That is, after I tell them to....

GET OFF MY LAWN!!

My neighbors know when we are out of town and we know when they take short or long trips. My neighbors send me weekly E-mails telling me how the neighborhood is and one of my neighbors likes to send a photo of my house with his. Telling me that I need to mow and showing how tall my grass is!

I do the same for them also. This works well for us...

Keith,
VERY glad this turned out the way it did. We had some tweakers casing the house in the middle of the wee hours a few times a year ago or so (who else would be there in the middle of the night). There were two occasions where they hit the comm button at the gate - ostensibly to see whether anyone would answer) I never answer without first getting a visual on the gate - looking for vehicle lights). When I do pick up - I never speak unless someone first speaks on that end. On a later occasion, no vehicle lights... I called the Sheriff because it was clear that they were at a point of trying to entice the dogs with something to get them to stop barking (heard them doing this over the intercom I have set at the driveway gate) BUT continued for several minutes leading me to believe that their intent was clearly entry to the property. Of course it took the sheriff a while to get there so my neighbor and I were in comminucation & on alert (he's former LAPD) to try to get some kind of description. The kids were spooked, dogs were excited. I've got to believe that guys casing our homes is a lot more common than we realize - and it's getting more common all around us.

While I do not have CCW priviledges at this point I can not carry in public. But I can - and do on my property. Someone noted "over kill" in commenting earlier in the thread... your experience just confirms to me that it is not. The BGs are pretty adept at hiding their intent - he may have been looking for a social event at the club house... but I sincerely doubt it the way you described it. This guy was casing your place.
