Default Here's One For You....

Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar to you.

Wife and I had just left my son's baseball practice this evening, and decided to "make a run for the border" for supper on our way home. Drive through was busy, so it was taking a while for us to get up to the order taking place. This is a typical drive through lane, except one side has a steep drop off to a lower parking lot. I don't like to crowd folks in drive thru's, so I leave plenty of room between me and the car ahead, but the guy behind me is close, so close that I can no longer see his headlights in my rear view mirror. Car ahead of us has already placed his order, but has only moved a few feet ahead of the speaker menu, so I move just a bit closer to the menu board, and put my rig in park, as it looks like we might be a while. SO I have drop off on right and ahead, menu/speaker board on left, and a car crowding me behind. My window is down, as I am about to place my order. My arm is resting in the open window.

Wife says something about how long it is taking, and I say, "Just think, if it was going any faster, we wouldn't have all this quality time together!" We laughed at that....and then, out of the corner of my eye I catch a flicker of movement in my drivers side mirror. A gray sweatshirt. I hear pounding foot steps. Someone has rushed up to my left arm (resting out my open window) and has grabbed it! I have nowhere to go. We are pinned in. I feel things are about to get ugly. With my left hand, I smacked at the aggressor and shoved them back. Twisting my legs to the left so I could clear my knees if I needed to, and right hand under my shirt and on my Kimber (still safely in it's holster), I turned to assess the threat.

Now know this; from first glimmer of sweatshirt in mirror to threat assessment has taken like, 2/10th of nothing flat. Things are happening fast, but I remember hearing my leather seats "creek" as I squirmed and feeling that the checkering on my grip frame and panels was very pronounced. It is then that I hear a familiar laugh. It is my 16 year old step daughter. Her dad, unbeknown-est to me, had pulled into the parking lot behind us and stopped short so Step Daughter could jump out, run up to my window, and "scare me".

Mission accomplished kiddo!

After a stern azz chewing (by me and her mother) right there in the drive thru lane, I hugged her and kissed her and apologized for smacking and shoving her, but qualified it with we were both lucky that's all she got. You see, Step Daughter was in the car with us a few years ago when we were the target of an attempted car jacking, so she knows I am weary of that. She knows I carry, etc....Why she would pull a stunt like this, I do not know... I don't think she will do it again...at least not to me.

All I can say is after it was all over, I had a throbbing head ache (adrenaline is amazing), a scared and hopefully more thoughtful step daughter, and some pretty good $.89 burritos.

Blaze away.

Hey at least your training kicked in and you just didnt start shooting at something that may have been a threat. You kept you cool, pushed the treat away buying you time to really see whats going on. Great job

I don't know why you should be blazed. Like Scott said, you assessed the threat before drawing. Good job!

I have a friend who thinks it's hilarious to scare the crap out of other people. Her latest escapade involved her and her teenage son dressing up in all black and going out to her friend's house who lives in the country. She was home alone with her husband out of town, and this "friend" of mine decided it would be funny for them to break into her house.....she blabbed about the whole thing on Facebook, thinking it was hilarious to see this poor gal's face. I flat-out told her right there she would've seen the barrell of my gun.

As far as your step-daughter is concerned, most teenagers having the feeling that they're invincible don't fully process that you would feel otherwise, even after your carjacking experience. Youth....

My kids learned at an early age not to try to "scare" dad... came within a "hair" of kicking #1's head in one night in the middle of the night when he came into the bedroom and grabbed me... so we institued a come to the foot of the bed and touch dad's foot and talk to dad rule...works pretty well...by the time #3 came along it was well greased...they still scare mom though......which is scary...

I'm real proud of you!

Not many people will admit to having dinner at Taco Bell.

Good show!

Ha ha. I'm typically one of 'em. Not like we got a lot of choices here though. ha ha.

But yeah, I think my family knows quite well not to try scaring me. But there are some other friends that might not know so well how bad of an idea that is. Good thing you realized who it was before something bad happened.

At 6' and 160 pounds she towers over most everyone in her world. She has yet to be set down hard on her dainty little backside. I hope she learns something from this event, but at 16 years old, I have my doubts. "My" kids know to approach daddy with care, Step Son sortta gets it, Step Daughter is a hard head, like her, um......, one of her parents.

El Gato; knowing the mother of your children, I would not want to scare her either!

As for Taco Bell, well, I, and everyone around me, am paying the price today....

Great job keeping your cool while your under stress, and as your training has taught you, ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR TARGET if and when you draw. Thank God it never came to that!!

I sometimes get a strange craving for just good ol' crunchy tacos and burritos myself. I also think they should bring back the Bell-Beefer!!

The Bell Beefer Rocked! I also loved the Chillito! Extra Cheese and sour cream with a big ol' Dr Pepper.

Eeewww!

My wife will yell it's me if she makes a loud noise getting up in the middle of the night to restroom or whatever so I don't don't go for the gun.

Not to mention surviving it.
Glad no one was hurt.

Interesting situation. Well handled.

Complete opposite in my family. Kids run when they see me. They don't mess around with the old guy. My grandkids on the other hand like to Boo me all the time.
