I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, feel free to move if needed. I am a newbie to the forum. I am waiting for forms to begin the ccw process. I just purchased a glock 27 and am in the 10 day waiting period. I continue to ponder this process and my gradual "removing my head from the sand" and realizing that the statement " it will never happen to me" has no basis in fact, only hope. An incident from several years ago has come to my mind.
I was driving tractor on my farm, about a quater mile behind my house when I saw someone parked in the fruit tree orchard directly behind it. The were putting something in their trunk. I realized what they had were long guns.... my long guns! I put that little tractor into high gear and went bouncing at full speed down the dirt avenue towards them. They saw me coming and started to get into their car. The brakes don't work too wellon the old tractor and I could see that I was going to overshoot their car so I turned toward them, stopping with my front tire against their rear bumper. All I had with me was my shovel and my mellow old yellow lab who was looking a little bewildered right about now. The three young men got out of the car to confrontme, I stood up on the tractor with shovel in hand. I remember one of them put his hand in his pocket. There was about a two or three second stare down, without a word. Then all three turned and fled through the orchard. I hurried to check on the house, seeing the back door open. I knew what I would see inside, as our house had been broken into and randsacked on 4 other occasions over the last 10 years. What I didn't expect was to meet another guy coming out the back door just as I was about to go in. I yelled for him to drop the vcr he was carrying. (It hit the cement steps, no longer usable) This guy was my size, 6'2" 230lbs. He was startled enough that his first action was to comply. I got him on his face in the kitchen, called 911 and kept both knees in his back while he continued to do push ups trying to get away. The authorities caught one of the other guys because of the car. That evening as my wife and I were trying to clean up the all the mess in the house she found a two shot 22lr deringer in our closet. It is one of those closets with lower ledge and high upper shelves. Evidently on of the bg's dropped the gun while rasacking the closet. It wasn't until some time later that I realized that the 2 to 3 second stare down with the 3 bg's at their car had more going on than I had at first realized. I am now sure that this one who had his hand in his pocket was feeling for the gun that wasn't there. Had it been, things might have turned out much differently. As I reflect on this event I realize how fortunate I have been over the years. Without going into GC issues, I know I have been blessed and watched over in some of the circumstances I have faced. However now at 55 years old, it has become tougher to fulfill my responsibilities as head of the household. The other day a law enforcement helicopter used one of my hay fields to land their bird. It wasn't rescue, but tactical. They were going down the street to assist on a call of a neighbor being confronted by two armed bg's, one armed with an ak47. I used to worry about our house being broken into, nowdays I think about home invasion and such. We live in a very different world. Thank you so much to those who contribute to this forum your experiences and expertise. I hope your realize how valuable your experience is to those of us who are new. My desire is to become a humble, confident California citizen as I continue my walk on the side of the gg's. Thanks, blessings Hayman |

Welcome to the forum.
Wow. You were lucky. It's stuff like that which is why I taught my roomie how to shoot and handle a firearm.
