Make sure it's just tea, no an "iced tea" from the alcohol serving portion of the restaurant, those used to be brutal back when I used to consume libations in excess.

True enough. Here is one that hit me like a bat. No more public urinals while carrying. Makes sense once you think about for a while

Are you trying to start a new tradition around here?

I like to drink a lot while carrying, and then shoot the empties when the beer runs out. It is a great way to keep the fun going. Might try it with others some time... the solo thing is a bit depressing...

[quote]If I leave the house carrying but get a last min call to meet up with buddies for a cold one, is breaking down and locking up my hand gun in my truck and not carrying acceptable?

it sure is as long as you follow the prescibed routine laid out by swdr. oh....and you don't mind grabbin' nothing but your ass cheek and hanging on when the trouble starts.

why was it you wanted to carry again?

You have a new lifestyle. With that lifestyle there are hard decisions which have been made. One of those decisions is to not drink alcohol in public places. Another of those decisions should have been to not go into public places where alcohol is consumed. If this situation happens its not difficult to just say "No thanks."

If your old friends don't understand, then it's time to get new friends. Or unmake at least one of your decisions.

You can't have it both ways anymore. Nor can you switch hit because the likelyhood will be that you WILL do as you almost did here. And, if you leave the weapon in the truck & then get plastered do you REALLY THINK that you will have enough clear mental thought processing to leave the gun alone while you are intoxicated?
Guns are not toys. Alcohol and guns do not mix. Responsible adults know these things.

If you're talking about bars, that's one thing. But "public places where alcohol is consumed" includes most restaurants. Have you given up eating at your favorite restaurants where they serve beer and wine? Do you only eat at fastfood restaurants?

This is a very good point, I mean my CCW is a permit to carry, not become a hermit! LOL I like to hang out with friends and family and almost all the places we do that outside of homes and backyard BBQ's serve booze.

I totally understand that booze and guns do not mix and between booze and my gun I'll take my weapon any day. I'm not going to go to a bar w/ my gun and 99.99% of the time if I'm going to go to a bar it's a special time out and the weapon will stay at home. If I'm at a normal restaurant I usually have water anyway so I'm not missing out on that one... LOL

I think that everyone understood that I meant that we shouldn't go to places where the primary business purpose is alcohol consumption. I didn't think that I had to specifically say that and being "hyper-technical" in this instance isn't required.

And, no I haven't given up on dining out. But, when I go to Applebees, Elephant Bar, Stewart Anderson's, or places like that I do not sit in the bar area. Nor do I go to meet up with friends who want to go "have a few" or "celebrate" or whatever they want to call their latest reason for a drinking binge.

And, honestly, as I get older I find I have less tolerance for the dumber things that people do. So I either stay home alot with family or go off into the wilds by myself.

Well, since you're the one issuing pontificating about what he can and can't do anymore, and telling him that he has to ditch his friends if they don't understand, I think a certain extra clarity is incumbent upon you.

Where do you get off telling people what they have to do?

In point of fact, it's none of your damned business if he decides not to carry somewhere (or to disarm and lock it up) so that he can go out and have a drink with his friends, or at dinner. Each of us has to make those choices for ourselves. Some of us choose to carry 24/7. Some choose to carry only at certain times or places. It's an individual choice.

He asked about the legality of locking his weapon in his vehicle if he chooses to go meet his friends for a drink. He didn't ask if you or anyone else thinks meeting his friends for a drink is a good idea.

Oh My! As I’m sure you already know, he’s not the first one Mr. THE Gimper, and I’m sure not the last. IMHO there is a bit too much of this on the forum, but again, that’s my opinion, and we are all entitled to express it here. People just can’t expect others to assume they are correct because they say/believe/insist they are correct. Some of the words chosen in multiple threads are pretty blunt, but that comes with a public forum I guess. Makes for a lively debate! Thanks to you and all the other FM’s for this forum, as it has already allowed me to make an ass of myself more that once during my short time here, but it has given me much more knowledge and good fun also. As far as the OP, it sounds like he's an adult and fully capable of making big boy decisions to me. I guess we all have to find our own balance point of the right/privilege to CCW and the right to keep our lives somewhat normal. Gotta’ go, someone is kicking the soapbox out from underneath me.

Hmm. It does seem a little testy in here.

My take in order to answer the question:

1. Injesting alcohol while carrying. NO
2. Under the influence while carrying NO
3. Going to a "Bar" while carrying (even if no drink is ordered) NO
4. Going to a restaraunt where there is a bar YES, but do NOT order a drink
5. Locking up and stowing, then going for a cold one. Grey area. The law specifies that under normal circumstances that a handgun can only be transported for purpose, meaning it is going to the smith, a range, or some other bona fide reason. One cannot just keep a locked up gun in the truck at all times. CCW holders may get a pass if the weapon is listed, but I am not positive. Seems reasonable that we would, but who really knows.

I think it may be OK to have a drink at a private residence while carrying, but it would be incumbent upon you to massively limit your intake and not become influenced. I for one would not do it. If Im going to have a drink, I stay in or put it away at home then head out.
