Default CHP pulled me over yesterday

Ok so what can I say, first thing the officer said was " you were doing 83 in a 65 I am going to write you a ticket, hand me your CDL"

This time I used the silent approach and handed him both my CDL and my permit at the same time. Hands on top of the Wheel.

Officer with attitude

"Where are you carrying your gun"

Thaves

"On my right hip"

Officer with more attitude

"Why are you carrying a gun"

Thaves

"Because the Orange county Sheriff issed me the permit"

Officer with attitude

"Why are you carrying a gun"

Thaves

"I gave him a brief description of my good cause"

Its at this moment that you want to go into 2nd ammendent and blah blah blah....but what is the point.

The rest of the stop was normal, registration and insurance, sign here etc. I thanked him ( I bet that was the first time some said that to him while signing a ticket)

So to sum up, the silent approach works , he did not read my permit which suggested to me that he was familiar with it. Once he opened it he just wanted to know where my weapon was. It was a safe stop, I was speeding so no issues there, but he did have far too much attitude for my taste. I guess he does not get paid to be polite and must get a lot of **** on a daily basis.

When someone is being like that to me I am always extra polite...bless him and his little attitude.

Very commendable reaction to the situation.

1. You presented to him your status without him feeling threatened. So he did not require you to perform any calesthenics outside of your vehicle.

2. You took responsibility for your actions and treated it as "he was just doing the job that we pay him for.

3. You illustrated that the information that this forum shares with the readers is accurate and viable.

Very well done

Are you allowed to do that if you have a British accent?

Tim, you have more encounters than the rest of us put together.

To further our cause, all CCW holders need to be examples of being polite, taking responsibility, accepting the consequences of our actions and most importantly being slow to anger.

Thank you for showing him your good side. It's hard to do sometimes but you did well.

I am a bit disturbed by his insistence in knowing WHY you were armed.

Default Great job

Great job, THaves. I concur with Hygyliac. You used the "show your permit, don't say 'I have a gun'" approach and judging by the fact that you were not asked to "exit your vehicle," it worked.

It must have been hard not to answer the repeated "Why are you carrying a gun?" question without saying "I believe I just answered that," but it sounds like you handled it perfectly.

I would really like to know a polite and respectful way of declining to discuss my good cause in situations like this. There is no good reason for him to ask this question and frankly, it's none of his business. The only possible reason an officer would even ask (in these circumstances...not a friendly conversation) would be to apply his own approval/disapproval to your criteria.

My rural California "good cause" would never fly in L.A. or San Fran, and many other areas and I see no benefit in discussing it with field officers. I firmly believe (form my experience) that the vast majorty of all cops are professional and courteous, but "attitude" cops are out there. So, how to deal with this question?

THaves, you sure do get pulled over a lot!

Do you have Freeway Insurance by chance? I like their tagline - "Freeway Insurance. It's that thing you're speeding on."

I think he is doing it on purpose to refine his methods of interaction with LEO's!

Default same here!

got pulled over by motorcycle cop (garden grove PD) that got me on laser yesterday morning:

officer: stopped you for doing 55 in a 40, drivers license and insurance please

me: here is my driver's license, and another piece you should see

officer: do you have it with you?

me: yes sir

officer: insurance please?

me: it's in the glove box, may i get it?

officer: go ahead...

meanwhile, i noticed that the officer was getting a little nervous after he read the CCW.

he just rushed off to write me the ticket and i was on my way..honestly though...THE FASTEST i've ever seen an officer write a ticket..to the point where the ticket had a lot of scribble corrections on it....

wonder why he was so nervous?

Most LEO's would ask the question just out of simple curiousity. Sure it's none of their business, but don't tell them that. He might even be asking for his own safety. If you've had death threats / attempts on your life, he might want to know about that because is standing there with you. It doesn't matter if he approves or disapproves of your good cause. The issuing authority approves of it and that is all that matters.

Saying "Because the {insert issuing authority name here} issued me the permit" is probably the best first answer. If they continue to ask just tell them. They can't revoke your permit because they don't approve of the answer. However, the issuing authority can pull your permit if you decide to have an attitude problem with the officer.

Spicy is 100% correct of course, I was just commenting on the insistence. I guess I will give the officer the benefit of the doubt and assume it was to asses his current environment.

If you are gonna go the route of not letting the officer know if he asks, I would think this would be the safest most respectful way.

"With all do respect officer, I would rather not say."

It shows respect and lets him know he hit on something personal you would rather not discuss.

That being said I have my response memorized. I really don't have a problem telling him or her.

I just take the view that you can not get in trouble for being polite and answering any questions the best of your ability.

Thanks for everyoen support.

I agree that of the two methods I have used in the last few months with my encouters with LEO the silent method of just handing your docs is by far the best one.

You do not have to worry about what to say or that you may say the G word.

Just hand them docs and let them stay in control. ( they like that ....a lot)

Well done sir.

BTW, good to see you. You've been absent of late. Did you bring a note from your mother?
