Modesto police: Off-duty officer shoots armed suspect
Bee Staff Reports

An off-duty Modesto police officer shot an armed burglary suspect this afternoon, officials reported.

The suspect, described as a white man in his 20s, was taken to a Modesto hospital, where he remained this evening. His wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Findlen said the preliminary investigation suggests the officer called 911 about 4:50 p.m. after hearing an alarm sounding from a neighbor's home. He said no one was home at the residence where the alarm sounded.

The officer investigated and confronted the armed burglary suspect.

"The officer fired at least one round, and the suspect was struck at least once," Findlen said. "Those wounds are believed to be nonlife-threatening."

He would not say what kind of weapon the suspect had but said officers recovered a firearm at the scene. He said the incident took place in a residential neighborhood near Citrus Drive and East Orangeburg Avenue, which is just west of Coffee Road.

The Police Department and the Stanislaus County district attorney's office are investigating. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. Both are standard procedures for officer-involved shootings.

Police did not release the name of the officer or the street where the shooting took place to ensure his safety. Police did not release the suspect's name because it had not been verified as of this evening. They said they plan to release the suspect's names and the charges he faces.

From what I read the suspect got what what he deserved.

More incidents like this will make punks think twice about committing crimes.

I prefer to be one of the first two kind and to learn from others' mistakes.
