Default My First CHP encounter while Armed

April 28,2009 around 8:20 am.I was on my way to work kinda' late and not paying attention to my speed.Out of nowhere a CHP car surfaced and started following me.i pulled over and an Officer approached my car. Before this incident i have watched one episode of personal defense tv regarding traffic stop while legally armed.Mr.Ayoob said to keep your hands visible at the steering wheel and wait 'till the officer approach you.don't be reaching anywhere to get your registration and insurance paper 'cause the officer might assume you trying to hide something or worse, trying to pull out a gun.So i followed everything in the video when the officer finally knocked to my window.he said good am,i clocked you in doing 73mph in a 55mph zone.can i see your DL,Reg.,and proof of insurance pls.I replied:Good AM officer .Before we proceed i would like to inform you that i am licensed to carry and my wepon is inside that fanny pack on the floor.he then ask for my papers.i said can i get it inside my wallet which is inside my left front pocket.he said go ahead.for me this is not only because it is the procedure but my way of showing my respect to his authority being a LEO.everything went well and he even cut me some slack on my ticket.

You did very good on two counts:
1) The first thing you did was you advised the LEO about the CCW.
2) You keep your ID away from your weapon.

When carrying a fanny pack it's tempting to keep your wallet in one of the pockets but to put the LEO more at ease, it's better to keep 'em separated. That way you're not going to handle or get too close to your weapon to get to your ID.

Two things you might want to consider next time. Rolling down both windows before the officer approaches. (passenger one only if electric) Also having your wallet out of your back pocket whenever you are driving with a CCW.

Some officers are not going to let you reach into your back pocket even if you stated the CCW is in a fanny pack and not on your person.

Otherwise very cool on all fronts.

Oh and slow down!

a very good result punctuated by the fact that he didn't sentence you to capital punishment for an indefinite period

Seriously, though, welcome to the forum. We look forward to your input. Send a PM to CalCCW03 to get a rice paper icon added to your avatar denoting that you are licensed.

Good to hear things went smoothly(except for the citation).

I have read many posts in the past regarding traffic stops here and have picked up some very useful information from the members of this forum. First of all, I started to carry my wallet with my ID/CCW in my left rear pocket since I carry my firearm at around 3:22 on my right side. Then when I jump in my pick-up truck, I'm trying to make it a habit now to place my wallet either in my cup holder, or in the compartment where my ashtray would go...if I had one.

Thanks to all those who post constructive supporting comments, and great suggestions that help make life a little easier while CCWing!

Glad to hear the stop was almost painless, putting aside the ticket.

A suggestion - I have a separate ID holder I keep separate from my wallet for my DL and rice paper that I store either in my front upper pocket of my jacket or in my shirt pocket, so if you lose your wallet the most important items are still on you and it makes it simpler to show your ID and CCW paper to the LEO.

By the way, I got the wallet which came with the ID holder at Ross for $10.

Why the windows down? I would bring driver side down 10" or passenger side after he came up that side. I wouldn't want to invite any more prelimnary "search" than is allowed. I've seen LEO's lean in and look all around open windows fishing for cause. And #1 on the slow down, it gives you more reaction time to ALL the bad drivers out there. - I missed one today.

Why would you care if they look into your vehicle through an open window? There should be nothing there that needs hiding. If there is something that should be hidden then...... well, then that's a different issue. Anyways, rolling down the window for the officer is a courtesy. Since I have nothing to hide when I get pulled over, I roll down all windows. Worst that they can find is that old gym sock that I've been missing for a while

I was thinking the same thing but waited for somebody else. I have crank windows in my truck so can't really roll down the passenger side without looking like I am hiding something. I feel that way with my house too, nothing to hide ( I don't think ) but they don't have to mess the place up either like they do.
