Default First encounter with CHP

I was on my way to pick up my son at his friends house, and I noticed these funny red lights blinking in my mirror. So I pulled over and kept my hands on the steering wheel (after I rolled down the window). Then the cop says "I pulled you over for expired tags" I tell him that it is current - so I pulled out my registration papers, and BINGO there was my tag. So he took the paperwork and asked me for my driver's license. I handed my drivers license and CCW to him. He said "I asked for your driver's license" and he handed back the CCW. I then told him that the San Bernardino Sheriff's Dept. said that I have to show you that - and he said "What is it? " I told him it was a permit for a concealed weapon. He said "are you carrying now" and I said, "yes" He said, "next time, just tell me" he then asked for proof of insurance and I gave him last years paperwork because I forgot to put this years in the car. So I got a ticket for no proof of insurance. I signed the ticket, and he said "have a safe day"
That's all folks..... The guy was kind of a "dick"

LOL,

All the cops that I've asked about this say the same, "Just tell me, first thing"

The handing the CCW over woth DI has worked just fine for dozens on this site. The other route might find you quickly at the buisness end of a duty handgun. YMMV

I think he means by not having your current insurance information.

Has anyone on here wound up with a gun in their face when they told a LEO that they have a CCW?

Let's face it. He did not know what a CCW permit looks like, therefore he was defensive. Ok? Did he have a reason for that attitude. You tell me!
That is the kind of character that I rather not deal with!

Yea Mark you're right - but there was no need for the attitude he had

Yes there have been incidents of traffic stop turning into Felony stop. Think about it. First how does the person verbally say they are carrying? All statments are not created equal.(Handing a CCW with DI is pretty much uniformed) Second if yo go the verbal route you better have your CCW out because you aren't going to get a chance to dig it out.

Back to the statement itself. You can be pretty sure the LEO will not hear much after he hears firearm or gun coming out of your mouth. His or her job is to come home alive. Again YMMV

Give him the permit first, because otherwise, the next thing he is going to ask for after you say you are packing is your permit, if you are lucky. As for his dickiness, it must be disappointing to write tickets that aren't going to make the state any money.

Here's the dicey little problem with handing a LEO your DL and rice paper at the same time: When I first went through training, it was common practice in some states, particularly Illinois, and cities, double particularly Chicago, to keep a $20 bill paper clipped to your DL. The officer would take your license, etc, and after "inspecting" it, return the license, tell you to slow down, and have a good day. Chicagoans, having no clue that the rest of the country wasn't as corrupt as their city, would repeat the drill wherever they went. It never happened to me, but it did happen to some of my cohorts. Our procedure, normally, was to hand it back, and say, "just the license please." That's why, to this day, the LEO will have you take your license out of the wallet, etc. before s/he will touch it.

Personally, I would not touch anything but the license. While I never encountered a CCW either, I don't think I would have taken it until it was explained to me, to some extent, and I could see clearly that it wasn't a bill, or a business card, etc.

I'm not saying that turning over the rice paper along with the DL is a bad idea. There's just this little factoid that complicates things.

By the way after the officer left I did find my updated insurance card - it was between the seats My car had been broken into and things had been thrown all over - I even explained that to the officer.
