Default Sloppy CCW

I went to pick up some To Go food last night and I was waiting for my order I noticed this older gentleman at the counter with his family. As is the case with most of us who CCW I try to be very aware of everyone in my vicinity. Well, I made this guy immediately; he let his shirt hang on his revolver for everyone to see. Honest mistake. What got my panties in a bunch was that this guy was ordering a beer for himself. Totally irresponsible in my opinion. So, I immediately got up, placed myself in between him and who ever else might be able to see he was carrying and had the following (discrete) conversation:

Me: "Hey there, how ya doing?"
Him: (Looking at me like who the heck are you) "Uh fine"
Me: "Looks like a pretty tasty Heineken you got there"
Him: "Yeah, I'm looking forward to it"
Me: "I bet you are, nothing like a beer on a hot day"
Him: "Yep"
Me: " By the way, you might want to cover your piece there. You're giving a fantastic view of it to the entire restaurant. Have a SAFE evening."

He turned a very bright shade of red as I turned away, covering his handgun. For the next 10 minutes I was there he didn't touch the beer he ordered.

Good for you!!! Very nicely done, you made him aware of the guns and alcohol ethics without any unpleasantness. Surprised that he didn't extend his gratitude to you for atleast informing him that he was naked to the world.

Default Sloppy CCW

Hi, guys
I am just glad ChrisG made the catch. And not someone with the wrong mind set. I hope "the guy" wasn't a CCW holder, because CCW holders have to represent. What one CCW holder does effects all firearms owners. Kudos to ChrisG. Thank you, ChrisG, and be safe.

Good Catch ChrisG. I think that's someone that probably shouldn't be carrying a gun and I probably would have done something different than you.

Openly displaying his weapon, while accidental, is not that big of a deal and I would have said something to him. But you combine that with ordering the beer while carrying and that is a huge problem. I would have called the police on the guy, because people that decide to drink when they are armed shouldn't be allowed to carry. We don't need people like this to ruin it for the rest of us.

Hi, Spicy McHaggis
Can you confirm the older gentleman was a civilian CCW holder? Or could ChrisG? It's got me wondering. I wasn't there, but it sounds like somebody off duty. People on the job have a habit of taking liquid refreshment while off the clock, although it is not wise to do so. And somebody that has been on for a while, working a desk might be a little careless. Or the person a civilian, heaven forbid was carrying illegally. Anyhow, be safe.

I could not confirm that he held a valid CCW but based on my gut (how he was dressed, establishment we were in) my guess is that he was legal. My gut also told me he was not active LEO either. Retired maybe, but not active. The motive behind what I did was to call him on the fact that he was being an idiot, which is why I brought up the beverage of his choice prior to bringing up his exposed handgun. My point was taken as he did not touch his beer while I was there. I have no idea what he did after I left.

In response to Spicy's comment, had I witnessed him drinking multiple beverages or being intoxicated I definitely would have notified the local PD.

Most current LEO's would have a badge next to the gun on the belt. Retires don't, because they don't get one issued.

Due to the fact he was carrying a wheel gun, I would guess retired LEO.

I can't confirm what he was because I wasn't there either. I'm just basing my statement off of common sense, which this guy was lacking. I'm sure if ChrisG didn't point out the fact he was displaying his weapon, this guy would have been partaking in his adult beverage with great enthusiasm. He didn't order it to watch the pretty bubbles float to the top. Simple rule, you don't drink and carry... ever.

Civilian CCW - Shouldn't be drinking while carrying.
Retired LEO - Could probably care less
Active LEO - I would think his department would have regulations about about drinking and carrying. Most do.

Also, most LEOs I know, retired and active, would tell the person that pointed this out that they were a LEO so as not to "frighten" anyone or cause a disturbance.

The funny, uneducated post about me being a girl was removed. So I'm removing my comment to unsub. If I ever go to a gun show again I will look him and introduce myself to him. That should fix the problem.
