Due to the fact he was carrying a wheel gun, I would guess retired LEO.
I never see off duty LEO's that are CCW wearing a badge on their belt.

That is if they are open carrying.

I understand that. The discussion is about a "sloppy" job of CCW.

If it looks like they have a wallet in each pocket then it would be a good bet for an off-duty or retired LEO, but not everyone does that and some keep their badge wallet in a front pocket.

Of course they do. That wasn't what was posted.

The post said that most LEOs would have a badge next to the gun on their belt. I disagreed. They don't. They carry one in their wallet/pocket or not at all.
My point in posting is so that people reading this thread get correct information and don't assume that if they see a gun but not a badge the guy/gal is not a LEO.

-Open carry. Going to court, working detectives, etc, etc. Badge on belt or around neck.
-CCW. No visible badge 99% of the time.

Funny this is coming up. I had two off duty officers in my office the last two days. Both had badges next to their guns. Both were from the same agency, Long Beach PD. I have other department swing by too, they all have badges in front of the holsters.

That is funny. Were they carrying CCW or open? I see lots of guys and never see a badge on the belt unless open carry. You obviously in your line of work see many...I'll defer to the man.

One under a light coat, the other under a baggy shirt. It was their days off too. It is a smart thing to do, someones see's the gun and then see's a badge. They won't freak out. They see just the gun, somebody gets called, then cops show up a make a scene.

Sloppy carrying, yes. I don't, however, see the problem with having a beer with dinner. Operative word is "a". I wouldn't think of more than one while carrying (or driving).

The problem is you will lose your CCW for life. Guns and alcohol do not belong in the same sentence.

CONDITIONS FOR PERMIT HOLDERS

Permit holders are subject to the following conditions, and any violation thereof or of any restriction placed on the license itself shall constitute cause for an immediate revocation of said license. The license must be surrendered upon demand, and it may be seized by any peace officer and returned to the Sheriff.

APPLICANTS MAY NOT:

1.
Consume any alcohol and/or drug while carrying or transporting a concealed weapon.

2.
Represent to any person that he/she is a peace officer.

3.
Abuse this privilege by any unjustified display of a deadly weapon.

4.
Impede peace officers in the conduct of their activities.

5.
Refuse to display the license or to surrender the firearm to any peace officer for inspection upon demand.

6.
Violate any law of this state or country.

7.
Carry, concealed any weapon not listed on the license.

8.
Carry any weapon on or about your person, openly or concealed, onto an airport without the permission of the Port Director.

9.
Carry any weapon on or about your person, anywhere that is prohibited by law.

OK, I wasn't aware of the law behind california CCW (no, I don't have one nor have I checked enough into it to know every law). My apologies.

In that case, there is a problem.

Whether it is law of policy, those who have a CCW or who contemplate obtaining one must understand that the use of deadly force requires clear judgment. Anything that clouds that judgment MUST be avoided.

Nice, discreet way to handle it. What a poor example for his family . . . and you wonder if he was going to drive somewhere after that.
