Saying out loud anything close to "I am armed" or "I have a gun" is something you should try and avoid. Many times, no matter what you say or how you say it, the only thing the officer is going to hear is, "I have a GUN!." The concern is all he's really going to hear is GUN! And then what would you do if you were that officer?

The suggestion has been made... Just hand over your permit with your CDL. Say something like, "My county requires me to show you this," as you hand him the CCW lic. Then let the officer take it from there.... There prolly isn't an officer in the world who won't then ask a couple questions... so be ready to offer a polite and friendly answer to his questions.

Seeing the permit before hearing the word "gun" should give all involved the best chance to avoid any uncomfortable misunderstandings....
I'm not missing the point, I just maybe don't have the same level of paranoia. I've had the experience already with a Los Angeles based CHP and saying :

"Good morning/afternoon/evening officer. I have to inform you that I have a Concealed Weapons Permit and I am armed. How would like to proceed?"

worked for me.

Good call ChrisG.....

Do they ask what you good cause is, cause that is an open ended statement......

Just curious......But I think I'll use that one if....and if.....I get pullled over....LOL

My issuing agency told me to go with the "dont ask, dont tell" theory. Got told by the instructor to not say a thing about carrying a weapon unless the officer asks.

Personally, I've gone with the "hand over the CCW" method.

Almost every time, the LEO has asked "why are you carrying a gun?" I just tell them what my good cause is.

The one time I've been stopped while carrying, I waited until he asked me for my drivers license so I could hand over my CCW license at the same time. As I quickly learned after coming here, "announcing" doesn't always mean that you have to do it verbally.

And "immediately" doesn't always mean before the LEO can even say anything to you. To me, immediately means when it is safe to speak. I don't want to interrupt, confuse, or say a trigger word to the LEO during the stop. Why? The last thing you want to do is make them elevate the situation in their head. You may never notice the change, but it is there. You probably just made him angry, which means you just failed the attitude test. So you're probably getting the ticket, when he might have given you a break because you passed the attitude test.

We've gone over this topic on this site ad nauseum. Different people will do it their own way. This way is usually the best way for the officer.

Tango-52....My chiropractor told me the same thing....I stopped carrying wallet in rear pocket and he lost a good customer......

Paranoia? I'd understand you saying ""I don't feel the need to demonstrate the same level of caution, or concern..." but Paranoia???

Anyway... Your way worked for you... once. I hope works for you the same way if you ever need it again. But many of us here have heard several stories where your way ended up not working so well...

But hey, man, to each his own...

Your experience with a CHP Officer is not necessarily the same as what might be a completely different experience with a Police Agency who's primary responsibility is not traffic enforcement.

Trust me with these agencies you do not want to escalate a tense situation by unnecessarily making furtive movements, displaying aggressive body language nor making statements about being armed. It's a much better plan to try to de-escalate the contact by whatever means possible.
I completely agree with CCWI's advise. Be prepared (in advance) to hand the LEO your CDL & CCW, at the same time, without making furtive movements during a t-stop (if it's a traffic stop) or any hand movements near your weapon during any contact. Hand the LEO your CDL & CCW when asked for ID. The Officer will take it from there.
NEVER, EVER, SAY I HAVE A GUN.
BTW - saying I have a weapon sends the same message. Not a good move.

They have not been on the other side of the door like you and I have.

Do not let me find it. Notify me first by handing over your CCW with your CDL.
+1
What we suggest here in Kern is to tell the officer you have a permit and WHERE the gun is located... or to hand the officer the CDL and the permit and then let the officer take it from there.... good advice all.... personally I always carry my "wallet" on the left side and the gun on the right... if the cops want to see my "wallet" they can watch the left hand as has been pointed out... I carry the gun at 3:30 or so... on the right...
cops want the wallet... no problem.. I'm armed gun on the right side wallet on the left how do you want me to proceed officer...kinda thang...if the goblin wants the wallet... well... then we will just have to kick off the rodeo... or not as the case may be....

by the way....not that I get pulled over much... I limit my excess speed to no more than 10% over the posted...YMMV...

You don't look paranoid... I'm an expert AND I have stayed at a Holiday Inn....... just because your paranoid doesn't mean they are NOT out to get you......by the way...

having said that... you did what the county requires...
