Default San Bernardino County Faq.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Concealed Weapons License.
In order to qualify for a SBSD CCW License, You must meet these qualifications.

You must be a full time resident of SBC but outside of any incorporated city limits.( Exception: any Sheriff contracted city.)

If you live in a city with a police dept. you must first apply for a license from that police dept. If they are not issuing licenses, you must obtain a letter from them stating they do not object to the SBCSD issuing you a CCW license.

Fill application out completely, type or printed in black ink.

When all of the above is complete, call SBCSD Employee Services Division at (909) 387-3750 for a CCW interview..

OK.....So after all of that has been pointed out.
Where do you get the application? You call Employee Services Division at the same number above (909) 387-3750, to request the CCW License application forms. The personnel there are usually very cordial and helpful. They will answer your questions, concerns, etc. You will be informed that you must go there in person and pick up the forms, in most cases. Bring an ID with you, they will stamp the pick up date and time on the application.

Where do you go to pick up your application? SBCSD is located at
655 East Third St. San Bernardino, California 92415-0061
They are located just East of the intersection of Waterman Canyon Rd and Third St. in City of San Bernardino.

When you get the forms read them and follow the instructions.
Some pointers. You will need a total of 7 different persons. 3 will give you letters of recommendations and the other 4 will be listed on the form.
The 3 persons that will provide you with recommendation letters, will be usually contacted by telephone and the other four will be contacted by letter. SBCSD will use all of them to verify character reference.

About character references......you will be background checked, if you have past blemishes that may put the outcome of the application in jeopardy, such as Felonies, etc.....Sayonara! But if you have minor stuff long time ago, it should be OK.....No guarantees, so ask what the issuing parameters are.

The biggie. GC....What is that? Statement of "Good Cause".
If you have any circumstances that makes your person more "attractive" for a Bad Guy to attack you, a crook to assault you or rob you, etc. Anything that causes you to be more susceptible to an attack, that serves as one of the many possible reasons for you to be issued a license. A statement of good cause is very personal as circumstances vary with different individuals.

SBCSD. Who are this people? What kind of attitude/behavior can I expect from them? I hear that some sheriff dept. use subterfuge as a means to deny people?
Yes in some counties where sheriffs do not want to issue CCW licenses, it happens....What! from a lawman? Conduct unbecoming....dishonorable to the uniform.... Well, sometimes, almost.......But is is not so bad after all, we have those who are officers and gentlemen as well, no DBRA here, (Denial By Run Around).
If you live in San Bernardino County you are blessed with one the more professional Law Enforcement outfits.....Professionalism, providing a service!
When you have any contact with them, you be as professional as they are and it will be fine, they are on your side, that is the way it felt when I had my process, this is personal experience, no hear say.

Lastly. Be patient. At the time of this writing they are running 5 months from the time you call to set up your appointment to the actual appointment date.
They have one LEO and an assistant, who are running the whole thing. Lately there has been a "run on the Bank", lots of people applying for a CCW permit. So there is a backlog. Why so many people applying? A sign of the times.
(Some county out There is a year before you get your interview date!!!) We are ahead, still.

Next, and most important to me! (And to you!)
You play by the rules, and we will be here for you. We will help you with any of your concerns, questions, etc. so that we can do our part in helping you succeed.

OK.....You went to the interview, the interviewer went over your answers, added clarification points, added a few of his own questions.....You then say, "Sir, could I buy one of those "Get a Gun, Stay out of Jail" books. They carry it at a discount and the proceeds go to good cause, a win win situation. A terrific source of legal info. for Calif. CCW that is updated each year.

The next CCW class at the Academy will be on such and such date. you sign up for it. It will be conducted at the SBCSD Academy in De Vore. Bruce, your instructor for this class is a very knowledgeble fellow, as you will learn from going through the experience, will give you the fine points on CCW, the ethical and lawful details of gun usage, liability, ballistics, concealment etc...Then gun check and range qual. 12 shots, no timing. Distance is either 5 or 7 yards (Senior Moment!). They want to see you do a reload and exercise safe handgun handling at all times. (The gun is always loaded, finger off the trigger....the gun is always loaded, finger off the trigger... The gun is....)
You will get your qual. card signed and dated.

THEN.....wait...wait....It came today!!!!!

Alright, enough theatrics. You get the point?
Last advice. It pays to get trained by a CCW instructor, because it will make you better, more accurate and confident. When you show up for range class, you will smile, because you know you are trained, you are confident. You will qualify!
Go Get'em!
