Applying for a permit in Merced County
In order to be considered for a License to carry concealed weapon in Merced County the first thing that must be done is to contact the Merced Sheriff’s department and request the CCW packet. I will include all contact info and addresses at the bottom. They Sheriff’s administrator will make an appointment and you will be asked to pay a $50 nonrefundable amount for the CCW packet. Included in the packet is a message from the Sheriff is a standard CCW application, a reference page requiring 3 names and addresses and a Doctor’s sign off sheet. The Doctor’s sign off attachment requires a visit to you local physician, explaining to them that you are applying for a CCW and they need to sign stating that you are of sound mind and they have checked your vision. This part might seem difficult if like most of us we rarely if ever visit a physician. If for some reason your primary care physician does not feel comfortable signing the form, the best way is to call around and speak to the doctor’s office, tell them what you are doing and ask if the doctor will even consider signing the paper. The bottom line is that the Doctor’s job is not to decide whether or not you deserve a CCW but of your physical and mental health and to attest to it by signing. One other thing that the Sheriff wants to see is receipts of sale of all of the listed firearms on your application. If by chance you cannot find the receipts then you need to at least provide the store name you purchased the weapon from and approximate date. Once you have completed the application and all the required paperwork, you need to make another appointment to drop off the CCW application packet and all necessary paperwork. Good Cause: You will need to clearly state your need for a CCW. I don’t believe that the Sheriff will accept self defense as an acceptable cause. I would compare this County to Orange County when it comes to the Good Cause of the application. Do your homework and have others review and help you fine tune your Good Cause and you will have a better chance in this County. After you drop off the CCW application there is a good amount of waiting time. 1-3 months and you will receive a letter in the mail stating that you have been approved or denied. If approved you will need to make another appointment for the Livescan and then can go and get trained. The Sheriff has approved 3 different places to be trained and the Sheriff’s administrator can provide their names and numbers. Training for new permits is a 4 hour class. Following is the live fire qualification that consists of 2 B27 targets at 7 and 15 yards. 15 rounds per target fired from each firearm hits in 7 rings or better no time limit 30 Rounds Total. 3 misses allowed per target. Misses are out of 7 ring or off target. Once all the above is completed you need to make an appointment to go in and sign and pickup your permit.
