Default Safe question

Im going to ask for a little leeway on this.... Its not DIRECTLY CCW related, But I cant think of any place else to post it....

I have a tall (60") gun safe. As expected it has a nice felt lined "rack" in it that allows a half dozen or so rifles or shotguns to be placed in its little notches standing them up nicely and keeping them from banging into their neighbors.

Unfortunately, its at a fixed spot in the safe and its HIGHER than the ends of the barrels of most of my long guns.

Is there a off the shelf solution to this issue? Maybe a secondary rack that could be glued into the safe at a lower postion that would hold up the shorter guns?

Im figuring I cant be the first person here to have this issue... And somebody must have discovered a simple solution?

Thanks for the help.

My solution is to use one of the gun cases that came with any one of my handguns (some are thicker than others) and lay one or more* on the floor (*for width not height) of the safe and set the rifles on top of the cases thus raising the hight of the floor in a simple kinda way.

I have also been known to uses boxes of ammo. A rolled up back brace. Well you get the point.

I am sure there is a much more kinda way to do it. And no I do not have duct tape holding my car windows in place!

I've seen something close to Beano's solution...

My friend make a "box" and put on the floor of his safe. It gives him shelf the long guns sit on, and know the barrells reach the top rack... It also gives him another little cubby hole to stick ammo, etc., under the long guns.

The box was nothing more then four pieces of plywood... he stained his to match the color of the wood trim in his safe and it looks like it was made by the factory.

So... don't lower the rack... raise the guns.

My first thought was to build a box, but that doesn't meet your off the shelf criterion, so my modified solution to meet all of your cirterion would be to go to your friendly home building store, and buy a plastic box with a plastic drawer in side it. That way you can store ammo in it and get at it without dissambling your storage arrangement.

Ok this might not be cool but my mind is working here. How about a wooden dowel down the barrel to extend length? Cool or not cool?

I actually saw that done at a Turner's...the small Cricket (child sized) rifles would not fit in the gun racks, they put a dowel or cleaning rod in the barrel to extend it in order to stay in the gunrack--worked fine.

A short gun barrel, I'm not ashamed of, but ......

I think Im building a shelf.... I have a template (I took out the rack and traced it).... Just need some plywood, some felt, and a few hanging hooks and I should be GTG...

Dont want to raise the floor. Because not ALL of my guns are short....

Sounds like a good plan RD! My longer guns are in back of my safe. I like your plan!

Stack lead under the short rifles. The more the better. Makes the safe even more difficult to haul off, too.

I think I know the problem now...your safe is not full enough, if it were crammed to capacity, in a solid mass of guns, there would be no problem with guns tipping over or not fitting in the racks.

My suggestion (and you can always count on your friends to give you good advice) is to immediately purchase MORE GUNS!!! There, problem solved!!!

I have my "emergency use only" supply of ammunition stacked under the too short guns in one of my gun safes.

I also use stackable plastic storage boxes (4"x6"x4" used for workshops to store small parts) stacked in the "long gun" part of another gun safe to store handguns, accessories and loose ammunition (grab a handful and stuff a magazine) etc.

I try to keep ammunition and guns of the same caliber together, so it just takes opening one safe to be ready for action.
