Expensive knives are "trophies" more than they are tools. I prefer tools I am familiar with, know how to use, and am not afraid of losing, throwing, or breaking. Thus, I have no attachment to my tools and glamorous or fancy tools do not enthrall me.

I guess it would also depend on what you define as "expensive". A knive gifted to you is not "expensive", it is free.
I would never buy an expensive knife, because I would be too worried about losing it. But I don't mind buying a knife between $100-300 and abusing it or losing it. I don't think that is expensive. I've broken a few cheapo knives, because I abuse them. My last knife, a Spyderco Endura, lasted for more than 15 years with no problems and I put that one through heck and back. Until I lost it.

I fully expect my new Benchmade to last even longer, unless I lose that one too!
I'd be really happy if someone gave me a Benchmade, Emerson, Spyderco, Surefire, etc. as a groomsman gift. It means that I chose my friends wisely!
