Default How Many Mags

I recently purchased a XD-45 Compact 4". I am contemplating how many additional mags to purchase. I have anywhere from four to 10 magazines for each of my other weapons. Springfield is supposed to be sending me one each of the two mags that came with the gun so that would be two short and two longer ones. So here's my question- how many mags is reasonable?

Just to clarify, I'm not talking about stockpiling. My fun budget's going to be used for other items in the short run. I figure that the 10-round mags aren't going to be in too high demand, at least not yet, so I figure that I have time to buy more later.

That only pertains to 30 round AR mags.

After buying my XD 45 Compact I purchased 4 additional magazines so I wouldn't be spending as much time reloading at the range. Well, I still spend as much time reloading, just can go longer before I have to stop and reload.

If you're asking for the purpose of carrying extra mags, how many rounds do you feel are enough? How many rounds are enough if you are forced into a gunfight?

With a fully loaded mag and 1 round in the chamber, 2 extra 10 round mags in a carry holster, you'll be carrying 31 rounds. I would certainly hope that would be enough to get me out of trouble. It's about all my spindly little legs can comfortably manage to carry for a day, if my hips can hold up.

Just to clarify- additional mags would be primarily for rotation purposes. Only one extra mag to be carried at a time.

On a serious note.

One extra mag to be carried is enough.

My thoughts are this.

In a real life situation, if you fire 10+1 rounds and still need to reload.........

You'd better run!!!

As for rotation......I have at least 4 extra mags for each firearm.

But as Mad Geek stated, it's just for not having to reload so often while at the range.

Now as far as 30 rd mags...........For my XM15 E2S.....I've 8....

They were banned before I could acquire more.

The CCW course of Fire (Orange County) is 72 rounds, or 24 rounds at 3 distances. With a Sig P220 or an O Frame, you need 3 8 round mags per distance, or a total of 9 mag's per firearm.

With a 6 round revolver, you need 4 speedloaders per distance, for a total of 12.

That is how many mags per firearm you need.

I can't tell you what a 5 round revolver requires, since I wasn't very good at fractions.

You may want a few spares for when you take classes, you will often find it helpful to have some extras.

I usually have 4 for each handgun with the exception of handguns that take the same magazines. Somehow I ended up with 12 for my XD9's, must have been a sale at the gun show or something.

Everything else is a minimum of 4.. which usually ends up being 6 or 8 (or 12).

As for rotation - I didn't do a search before saying this so if this has been discussed to death then I'll let my idiot light shine but with factory magazines the rotation thing seems almost pointless. I found a fully loaded (15rnds) beretta 92fs magazine from 1995 earlier this year when my sister and I were going through the probate process of my dads estate. I remember loading that magazine and having it in my night stand. When my dad moved, he apparently took the nightstand without emptying it. The copper had as nice patina on it and it was dusty as hell. I loaded it into a 92fs and the thing fired all the rounds with no issue at all.

Even with that said, I still rotate the magazines quarterly. It's easy to remember and it sets an easy to follow routine for checking everything out. It's more of a "do a quick disassembly of the firearm, make sure everything is still ok then back to business" type thing.

And multiplying fractions is easy!

No kidding. And, while this might not be socially acceptable, I would use the cheapest mags I can while out on the range training. I tried to drop all of mine on the cardboard, but since I was focusing on the target I missed several times. I cringed every time I saw one of my Wilson mags lying in the dirt.

Here is my take on this statement: If you could run, you should have before pulling the trigger. You defend yourself when you can't run and if you need more than 11 bullets than you will be glad you had them with you as it is your last option before death.

Your point is taken.

However, you did not read the humor put into this statement.

I would like to know, how many civilian ccw'ers have been in "gun fights" and actually shot more than 10rds ?

The only one I am aware of is the civilian who shot an intruder who broke into the civilian's home. However, the civilian only fired 10rds.

When the Police arrived, they asked the civilian, "Why did you shot him 10 times?"

The civilian responded, "Because I ran out of ammo!"

Back to how many mags - I'm a mag whore and have 17 for my G22 that I use on range days and during steel challenge (five strings per stage/four stages per match) and defensive pistol matches (four stages per match) since I hate to waste range time reloading mags. Each match requires at least 120 rounds to shoot clean. The mags get dropped in the sand so I clean them with compressed air as often as I clean my gun. Each mag is numbered and I rotate through them in order as I use them.

I have two others that I keep for carry with one in the gun and one spare.

I guess that my answer to the question would be "one more than I own"

Sorry I didn't see the humor.

I see the humor in your post

Oh by the way I carry two loaded mag to balance the weight hanging on one side of me. Extra ammo is just icing on the cake.
