For the range - Winchester "White Box" 180 Gr. FMJ from Walmart.

For personal defense,
Winchester "T-Series" SXT LE Ranger hollow points

.40 was designed around the 180gr.

Heavier bullets in a .40 seem to have less recoil than the lighter 155gr 165gr

I have .40 cal Spear Gold Dot hollow points for mine.
I once got a case for a really good price. I also got some at a gun show that were CHP practice ammo which were rejected due to too much lead in the primer for indoor range use.
It works very well in my G23.

Like others, I use 180gr WWB in mine and I keep a couple magazines with Winchester Ranger T, 180gr available for HD use.

For serious though I stick with Federal hydroshock.

A test pilot friend of mine often says "The really interesting emergencies always start with a loud kaboom."

Federal hydrashock, Speer gold dot, Ranger SXT, Golden Saber, they are all good. Can't go wrong with using what LE uses.
Suggest shooting them to know what the recoil is like. Many buy hollowpoints, but never shoot them. The federal hydrashocks come in a box of 50. Maybe shooting half and keeping the other half just in case would help? Since most come in a box of 20 anyways.

For range use it, just buy cheap american brass like the whitebox stuff.

That's the reason I specifically like the Winchester pairing.

The Value Pack - especially at WalMart prices - is about the cheapest quality factory ammo you can buy. The Ranger is about the most effective. They both come in 180 gr., and at the same bullet weight they chronograph within 2% if each other. I can't tell the difference between them in recoil, flash or sound.

Also note that the hollowpoints need velocity to be more effective. Maybe getting a 155 grain hp?

Don't recommend +p ammo due to the increased recoil. This might cause a flinch in your shooting because it isn't consistent with the 180 grain range ammo's recoil.
