Default new earmuffs trial run

New earmuffs,

Just got these new earmuffs, $79 from sportsmansguide.com, (-$10 coupon) 31NRR level, which is excellent for an electronic earmuff. Tried them out tonight at the range, I was very pleased with them. They blocked the gunshot sounds perfectly, and I could still hear people talking between shots, excellent in my opinion.

I have tried cheaper electronic muffs, but they are not able to cut off the loud sounds efficiently, so it becomes a distraction. Also, you need at least a NRR of 29 to block loud gunshot sound, these are rated at NRR31.

That looks like a VERY good deal! I'm going to have to look into getting myself one of those.

Yes, the Peltor 105 has a noise reduction rating of 30 dB, these are rated at 31. I know 1 db doesn't seem like much but it's a logarithmic scale. 1 db is about a 25% change in the amount of sound that gets through, 10 db is 10 times as much sound.

Where I work we're running jet engines indoors, we wear both foam plugs and Peltors.

If they work as well as SB describes, they're a bargain.

I like to wear plugs and muffs when I shoot indoors. It make a BIG difference in the noise you hear. Since my hearing is pretty good (and I want to keep it that way), I can still hear the range commands clearly.

I haven't done much indoors shooting since I got back into the sport though. However, I can honestly say that doubling up like that also works quite well when hot off-loading a patient from a Helicopter...

I am going to try that. Wearing plugs and muffs. I have a medium to moderate hearing loss and I don't want it get any worse. i am lucky I am not deaf running the dyno all day with the muffs on. At work I can't wear plugs and muffs because I can't hear detonation that way.

If you plan to double up with ear plugs, I highly recommend Ear Plugs USA. There is a link in the Vendor section. http://www.calccw.com/Forums/vendors...plugs-usa.html

She is at a lot of gun shows and she is beginning to offer her services out of MV in south Orange County. Very nice lady. Takes the time to hand trim the plugs to ensure a comfortable fit before turning them over to you. Plugs are molded to your ear and much more comfortable then the foam ones.

The custom molded silicon ear plugs are not nearly as effective as the disposable foam ones. Molded plugs have a noise reduction rating of about 21-22, disposable foam are 29-31. Remember the logarithmic thing from up thread - that means they're letting in almost 10 times the noise.

Molded is much more comfortable than foam, but I'd only wear them WITH headsets.

You should. That is what I do. You will thank yourself when someone starts shooting off a hand cannon next to you.

Thanks for the link SB!

Outside I just wear the meffs.

Don't know about the numbers but the ones I have are more effective than the foam ones I use.

Molded silicon work much better than foam earplugs that don't fit well. If you're lucky enough to have an 'ideal' ear canal and foam plugs that fit it well, they do absorb more sound than the silicon ones, but the silicon ones are generally more comfortable.

Indoors at the range? I use silicon & earmuffs.

When I skydive, I use the foam ones because 1) the silicon ones don't work as well in 140 MPH wind (the more rigid material jiggles them loose in the ear canal), and the foam ones don't make me look for them if they fall out in mid air and plummet 12,000 feet to the ground.

Good find, that looks like the exact same product, at a lower price.

Hyskore is the manufacturer, here is their webpage for the product, including replacement parts and lab test results. Hyskore Over & Out® 6 Channel Electronic Hearing Protector with LED Lighting

I emailed Ear Plugs USA. they are about 5 min from me. I am going to get a few pairs. Great for when I am at work and don't want to wear my 105 muffs all day!

I also emailed my audiologist so i can see what pitched sounds effect me more and see if Ear Plugs USA has a certain material that blocks out more than normal.

I will be wearing the plugs WITH the muffs when shooting. For me, I need to make sure I am not around loud noises. I can't let my hearing loss get worse.

Good info guys. Thanks
